My first RIAT was 1985, I turned down a ticket to a music gig at Wembley Stadium (Live Aid, but I did not know what it was till after the event) but I DID get to see an EE Lightning in the air, so every cloud and all that.

Bargain for a whole day....

You could pay that to spend just 90mins watching a Premier League footie match.....

Good value for money given the lineup.

You can spend easily spend that getting into places like Peppa Pig World.

As above, bargain compared to anything remotely comparable really. Take a picnic and you really don't need to spend any money on site either.

We always book at super early bird prices, a single entry to Legoland costs quite a bit more!

I remember meeting him while skivvying at BAe Woodford in 1992, helping with logistics before the airshow in my first year as an undergrad. The Test Pilots team's low passes at high speed down the runway were legendary, but weren't met with a lot of enthusiasm by the CAA who had to approve the routine.

I can't wait to see the Ukrainian display at RIAT this year. A literal blast from the past smile

I suppose I think anything is expensive for an airshow, Brunters cold war jets is 20 qui and you can get far, far closer.

RIAT is not the best lineup I have ever seen.

Just seems pricey for me, when you will have to likely queue for hours in and out. I guess you guys must be converts. But hours at a venue does not equate to value in my eyes, there are lots of things.

Sorry but had enough of that back in he whole days, and I wasn't driving then, and the lineups were vastly superior.

My RIAT days go back to Greenham Common era, so agree with the vastly superior line up, but also, in those days we were spoilt for choice, with more than half a dozen RAF run major shows, plus the likes of USAF shows at the 'hall and Alconbury, Upper Heyford, B&W etc., as well as other major stuff........
Those days are long gone, and essentially, if you want to see current mil hardware flying today, its RIAT, Farnborough and not much else, so on that basis, RIAT is good value, given its pretty much the only show in town.
I've not been to RIAT for over 10 years now, and I doubt I'll ever go to another, but compared to other events, I think its still 'good value' at 50 squids.

So don't go then.
Plenty of people think it's a fantastic lineup, which I suspect is not fully announced yet.
I for one think RIAT do a brilliant job year on year.

Agreed. Plus the ‘queueing for hours’ comment is tosh, the traffic system works well.

I strongly agree with the point about the times-a-changing. I looked at some of my old photos from Woodford, which was my "home" airshow back in the 90s, and couldn't believe all the stuff I'd seen. It was one of the smaller shows, far smaller than Finningley or Fairford, but in one year I think we had a couple of Tornados, an RAF F4 Phantom, English Electric Lightning, a US Navy F14, as well as more modern stuff like F16s, F/A18s and of course the SU27/SU30 combo. Hell, we even had a Beriev Mermaid jet flying boat one year (one of the loudest things I've ever heard)!

That's why I'm happy to suffer the queues once every few years for Fairford. No, it won't compare with the year I saw one MiG29 cut another in half mid-way through their display (mercifully and miraculously nobody was hurt) but it's a good alternative to piston warbirds at Duxford or balletic airliners at Farnborough trade days.

Well, I for one want to make RIAT an annual thing. Duxford has its feel, RIAT is different but I like both.

I am quite happy remembering the older shows thanks.

The only one I was really annoyed I missed was Cottesmore, the last few I have looked at the flight plan and though, nope.

Despite that, half of the good stuff never flies so you have to take days off work to do arrivals and departures!. Not that sad thanks.

Do they stream RIAT for free on-line like many classic motorsport events? Do any TV channels show a highlights package? I used to enjoy watching Raymond Baxter at Farnborough.

What's the best way in?... roads around it look like blue cheese so guessing there are multiple options (or not)

Are some closed off during the event?
Nobody is going to be silly enough to advertise the (usually empty) back way in - but if you look at a map it's pretty obvious.
The roads are usually chocca so it's worth taking a back road.
