Is that plane a massive liar?
We used to call that Snoopy smile
I've done a couple of Majors on Snoopy whilst at Marshalls. It had very low hours for it's age, although a lot of them had been done over the sea at low level.
There was quite an amusing cock up after one it's resprays, no one noticed the crest on the fin had 'meteorological' spelt incorrectly. It was only after all the staging had been removed and the aircraft towed into another hangar that it was noticed. They had to build a scaffolding tower around the fin and repaint it during the night shift over a few nights.

Air contractors were based at Stansted using leased SAFAIR L100's with Irish registrations (head office in Dublin) to do anti pollution work after Air Atlantique stopped doing it. These aircraft used to support the Dakar rally as well.
One used to be based permanently at East Midlands Airport, I think, for anti-pollution work, until about 2 years ago.
I think that company is based at Lasham airfield now.
It’s OSRL Ltd (based in Southampton) they are modified and maintained at Lasham but are based at Doncaster. They also operate a PA-31 from there. They used to have an islander at Wicke and a Dornier at Bournemouth however this has all ended in the last couple of years.
Their the ones with the 727 at Doncaster aren't they?

The wings and engines were removed and sold on and the cockpit was saved (still at Marshalls?)

Correct they have 2 spray capable 727’s at Doncaster (although they’re a worldwide asset)

They gave a demo at Scampton airshow giving the runway a good soaking.

I’m currently working in an office next to the nose cone of snoopy! I was quite surprised how big it was.

You should have seen the towing arm snoopy came with!

Do you mean the flight deck front nose bit, like in the pic above, or the long pointy thing?

I think he means the 'long pointy thing'. I helped remove it during the de-modification of the aircraft and from day one we were told it was going to be saved.

It was an air data probe.

From the depths of my memory, I seem to recall that the 'long pointy thing' was salvaged and put on display in the atrium of the Met Offices' HQ in Exeter, but I can't find any pictorial evidence.

ETA: Found it - http://photobucket.com/gallery/user/metman_photos/...

Snoopy's demise was discussed right here on PH:

Slightly OT, but I've been watching plenty of A400M and Hercs heading back and forth from Brize Norton today. One of the Hercs had a bright tail fin, rather like a civilian airliner, seemingly white painted top and bottom thirds and possibly a yellow-ish image in the center. I presume it was some sort of special commemorative livery. The rest of the aircraft was the usual grey. Any ideas?

Do a Google image search for: 'Special Tail Hercules' and you'll see some of the schemes that have been appearing lately. I suspect the one you're referring to is 47 Sqn's 100th anniversary livery, although the aircraft is mainly green, not grey.

Of the Google photo options shown, I would say it was this one. Is that possible?

Ref civ L100. I use one as part of my job to get stuff from A to B.

When I say "I" I mean I use a contractor to operate/fly it for me.

Its operated by TRANSAFRIK. This plane has also just had a staring role in the latest Raid On Entebbe remake.

We used to fix Transafrik aircraft at Cambridge, out of all the operators they were definitely at the bottom of the list when it came to spending money, and top of the list when it came to fixing bullet holes etc.!
