Last weekend I chanced upon a Steampunk Festival. It appeared to be just an excuse for mainly middle aged people to don fancy dress involving hats and goggles.
I understand it's roots are in fantasy science fiction, but, is it just harmless dressing up games for grown- ups, or is there more to it than that?

The above are a rare exception tbf.
I’ve experienced 3 or 4 and it tends to be middle aged teacher types with beards and that’s just the women.

Grow up,

The fancy dress is just one aspect of it but I don't really get it, never really understood adults playing pretend though.

I quite like the style though and when incorporated into interior design it can be quite cool

The last pic looks like she's wearing a bit of Lord Humungus' outfit from Mad Max 2.

I'm far too 'straight' when it comes to wearable fashions, but I love the look of it, especially in the movies. I think Gary Oldman in Dracula and Johnny Depp and they are pretty cool. I doubt in the real world many people can get away with it without looking a tt though!
Bars and restaurants designed around it can look great and I'm actually likely to put a hint of it in a cottage we are renovating for holiday lets. There are some really cool lights and accessories on the market. Just type 'steampunk lighting' into Google images!

Like the look, would feel like a tt wearing it.

The closest I get to steampunk is wearing a metal cased watch with a metal bracelet.

Indeed, been there and it's quite a spectacle.

Off topic, but I measure cold weather by the benchmark of how cold it was on the Bram Stoker walk we went on. Ice cold wind from the North Sea cutting you in half it was so fking cold. Leningrad in February was preferable to that. Face was like this -----> frown

Semmed to be mostly a middle aged/retired thing from what I saw.
