If the story is true, surely someone would have simply knocked him out?

from what I read the commuters "kicked out" were ones that had not paid for a first class ticket, if that's true then fair enough.
I was just typing the same thing - if he hadn't told them to leave he would have First Class passengers who have paid for First Class complaining to him instead.familyguy1 said:
and .. Do we live under mob rule now ?
No, but the very well documented problems with Southern and an overcrowded train on a hot day would have surely led to someone taking the opportunity to vent their frustration... if the story was true as tweetedThat it didn't work out that way leads me to believe the tweet isn't the full story.
Well, the fact that he considers his bag to be more important than the people being forced to stand doesn't say an awful lot for his customer service abilities...
First rule of any senior management travelling on company aircraft when I was still in airlines was that we'd be the first point of contact for customer problems and we'd always do our best to try and sort things out if there were issues. You'd never put yourself above a passenger and many times gave up my seat in Business and perched on a crew jump seat for the duration.
So whilst the tweet might not be all the truth, the pic does say quite a lot to me.

If true, a non story...
"Passengers need a first class ticket to travel in first class and there were other people with first class tickets in this compartment.
"This was an 11am off-peak service running just six minutes late and, while the front coaches were busy, there were seats and space in the rear coaches, as Mr Boon explained.

Part of rail staff travel entitlement conditions state that you should surrender your seat if a paying customer needs it. I suspect that also goes for your luggage, no matter how fking important you think you are...
Paying customer. As in one that had paid for a seat in first class. If the people had standard tickets I would argue the clause technically doesn't apply.Although making customers unhappy (by denying them use of unoccupied space) for the sake of a technicality on a delayed and overcrowded train...is the work of a high grad knob. If that is indeed what's shown.

Exactly, it's the entitlement generation, trying it on to get a free upgrade."Passengers need a first class ticket to travel in first class and there were other people with first class tickets in this compartment.

Regardless of what the story is, if you go around as a senior manager with a big hi-vis bag and your ID on display, then expect stuff like this . Either be in stealth mode, get in with the driver (cab pass permitting) or man up and actually talk to punters. Lets face it TOC's need all the good PR they can get and he missed a chance. I've had plenty of management ride up front both from NR, Rail Regulator and whatever TOC/BR I was driving for , many regarded the cab as a far safer place to be than the train despite the ear bashing they got from staff. Todays senior management regard both passenger and staff as something to be avoided at all cost in many cases, with some going out of their way to make life difficult anyone with BR history who happened to be on the management scene.
Anyone who believes a tweet like that at face value without looking for any further supporting information has a severe naivety overload
I see, to recall a story from a few months ago about poor hard done-by Jeremy Corbyn having to sit on the floor of a northbound ECML express because of overcrowding, only for it to come out in the wash that there were plenty of seats available on that train, but he hadn't looked for them. Doesn't make such a good story. does it?

I'm reminded of a story in Gerry Fiennes' book "I tried to run a railway" when he was travelling from Paddington to Cardiff. On arrival at Newport he got out of the train, flashed his cab pass to the driver and sat up the front with him.Says the driver "I hear the General Manager is on board"
Fiennes "Yes he was but he got out at Newport"
Driver (laughing) "I wonder where the silly bugger's got to"
Fiennes: "Into your cab"

Not sure if it is all Govia services, but First is declassified on my route...
Only on the peak services and only until 15th July. This was an 11am, so off peak, service.
However, these new trains I challenge anyone to spot the difference between the first class seats and the normal ones.

Obviously space to put your bag next to you but also not being subjected to stinky body odour from the commuters who are still wearing the same clothes from the day before and haven't bathed that morning. This was an 11am, so off peak, service.
