My nephew loves trains and wants to learn more about the mechanics of them. I was chatting with my sister about this and we recalled a childrens TV programme from our youth (would have been on during the 1980/90s) about a group of children finding a steam engine on an old line and getting it running again. Does anyone remember this and what it was called? Google-foo failed me this time.

Are you sure it was the 80s / 90s..? I'm wondering if you're thinking of 'The Flockton Flyer' which IIRC was shown c.1977.

Thanks, will send that over to my sister. It's certainly the right era but the story-line doesn't seem to fit with what we remembered - which was the restoration of an old line following a locomotive being found.

I don't recall this programme at all and, given my personal history and the fact that I had under school-age kids cluttering up the house at the time, I'm surprised I don't recall it!

Now this may sound daft and it is a long shot, but the plot you describe is not at the opposite end of the spectrum to the 1952 film "The Titfield Thunderbolt." which has been shown on TV umpteen times over the years. Is it a possibility? The link to your scenario is them dragging an elderly engine out of a museum to run a Board of Trade inspection special the next day. (Film scriptwriters and directors clearly knew nothing about boiler certificates back then... whistle )

Just a thought.

Not the same story the OP depicts, but two other films would be the Great St Trinians Train Robbery - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5_8ZisNSk8 - and Runaway Railway - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbDd6hmj6_U - both filmed on the Longmoor Military Railway in 1966. The latter is based on a bunch of small kids operating a tank engine and getting involved in a heist. I recall watching these as a train obsessed boy in the mid 80's.

I thought of that, I remember it mainly as my gran died halfway through watching it which kind of spoilt it.

Are you thinking of the comedy series "Oh Mr Porter" which used Highley for all the outdoor shots (featuring most of the cast from "Hi di Hi"), or a specific children's show?

“God’s Wonderful Railway” was filmed on the SVR, but that was a sort of potted history of the GWR, rather than locomotive restoration.

Latest from sister, it might have been Australian! She remembers the train being hidden or being found amongst trees.

Thanks for all suggestions - appreciated!!!

Ahhh that brings back old memories, my mother still has a whole bunch of VHS tapes with a load of programs about trains on them my grandfather recorded and this one is definitely on one of them biggrin
