I've been in a Mk3 coach with failed AC when its 30 degrees outside with blazing sun, and every seat is full.

Nobody died or even fainted surprisingly. The TOC just handed out water bottles.

Not pleasant.

To me part of the fun of riding on a preservation railway is travelling on the old carriages I cannot see the point of being in Mk3 coaches, may just as well be hauled by a diesel. We went from Victoria to Venice on the Orient Express for our honeymoon, that was fantastic. It was 27 years ago so Pullmans to Folkstone, then hydrofoil to Calais and then the Wagons-Lits to Venice. Chatting to some Americans in Venice they commented that they were surprised the cabins didn't have showers! hehe

Brighton Belle looks wonderful. My mum and dad too the Bournemouth Belle on their honeymoon.
Don't they use Mk1s on mainline steam hauled runs anymore?
p.s. What's a plastic pig?

Not sure why the discussion regarding Mk3 coaches on steam hauled main line trains is still rumbling on. The photo which brought it all up clearly had Mk1's in it, not mk3's.
I didn't see any blood down the side of it, so nobody got their head taken off !

Mk3s do look wrong though. As my Dad pointed out when I attempted to couple up a Black Five to some Airfix Mk3s. And then he grumbled that I'd spent my Christmas money on Mk3s.

Funny the things that you suddenly remember.

My grandad was the same. To a kid, any loco fits any truck or carriage, Thomas can go at express speed and Britannia can be used for shunting. As you say "Funny things you remember" smile

Other way round for me. Had what must've been one of Hornby's first releases of 125 power cars in 78 or 79, but no Mk3s, in fact very little rolling stock, so ran them with a GWR brown/cream composite, an Esso 4 wheel tanker, a car transporter, open wagon & Coca-cola branded closed wagon.

I beg to differ, my above set up looked wrong.

So as a tip if you are ever in Phoenix AZ there is a historical railway that runs an old mining route. Bar in every carriage and an outdoor carriage so you can stand outside to view the scenery as it passes at about 15/20mph

Just be prepared for the loud gasps as you turn around when they mention the station is nearly 100 years old : )

Probably the best place for this but had the privilege of popping to Germany the other day for some train and rollercoaster based silliness

hopefully these are reasonably cool...

and you're right, it is quite amusing hearing the guides talk about the historic district of 'a place' being over 100 years old hehe

Colourised version I found on google.

I recall seeing this picture some years ago.... the sort of train you'd catch when visiting Gotham City.
Or in Frank Miller's Sin City
