Nothing particularly spectacular about these but some nice images all the same :

Senior driver at Old Oak Common Depot Bertie Miles aboard D1000 'Western Enterprise' working the Royal train at Newbury Racecourse in 1970...

Old Oak Common driver Jimmy Kendall aboard D1053 'Western Advocate' at Paddington in 1973...

Twighlight at Paddington in April 1964 with a North British built Type 2 D6326 working empty stock to Old Oak...

Bertie Miles again, posing with his guard Henry 'the Pole' at Cardiff Central with D1009 'Western Invader' in 1974...

Powering away from Exeter St.Davids aboard D1015 'Western Champion' on a rail tour in April 2008...

I’d have seen all those Westerns, I copped the lot when I was kid in Ealing. Mind you, look at the filthy state of Western Invader, disgraceful the lack of pride shown by BR in those days. North British Type 2, is that what I’d have called a ‘Baby Warship’, were they named?

Coincidentally D6326 became the subject of a Dapol model.

A lot of the surviving Westerns received full repaint's at Laira dept in the '73 to '75 period but the chemicals in the carriage washing plants soon stripped half of the paint off. They were all supposed to be withdrawn by '73 but it took another four years to get rid of them.

And yes, NBL Type 2 = 'Baby Warship' wink

(When Dapol were developing the NBL Type 2 and Western models I helped them out with the research on all of the livery variations)

Nice job you did, was that the reason they chose D6326 to make a model?

Westerns in BR maroon with a small yellow visibility panel e.g. D1039 Western King panel is how I liked them, but they also looked good in green. Golden ochre, desert sand and BR blue looked awful!

I wonder what the mooring fees were in those days.

Can't be much, judging from the boats visible on the picture.

They were being very careful to do the right bodyshell / livery / number combination, there were only fifty eight built but there were numerous differences and they wanted the model to be as accurate as possible. The locos had a very short life span but had numerous modifications done at Swindon Works, they were built in three separate batches with three different front end variations which didn't help wink

With the Westerns it was much easier, as every modification and livery variation was recorded along with the dates they went through Swindon Works for overhauls and repaints etc. A lot of inaccuracies have appeared in print and been repeated by other authors down the years, so it was a case of going through every available source, checking photos, dates, sightings, official records etc then collating it all in one place. There were some very specific differences in the livery applications between Swindon and Crewe Works when they built the Westerns, which took quite a while to sort through. This is the end result of my research...

Another oddity from my album. This was on the Manchester/Sheffield Woodhead route.
The crane was from Longsite depot and my Dad, having swapped the footplate to become a fitter, was the crane driver.

The middle two pictures are not on the woodhead line as there are no overhead wires.

Hunslet Loco, manufactured in Leeds iirc pulling two "torpedoes" as they are known locally. Each one is carryimg around 200t of liquid iron to the steel plant in Shorpe
Sadly 11 men were killed in 1976 when water got into one of these torpedos and the liquid iron erupted

Excellent work and great that those wagons are being kept in a shed when not in use.
