UK gauge vs North America:
Is that a real pic or a photoshop? If the former, then what’s the story with it. Why would a CN Rail loco be towing a load of class 66’s?

Built in Canada, on their way to the docks for shipment to UK.

Always makes me smile to see how many are smoking away parked by the side of the extractor instead of under it laugh
These are really lovely photographs.

Interesting that the American train looks like a classic piece of art deco desgn, whilst the British train looks like an ordinary train with a metal case on...!
I was going to protest about that, but actually yes you're absolutely right.
Practicality vs aesthetics? The British one could push as well as pull, whereas the Yank one clearly couldn't.

We get used these days to our steam trains being nicely painted and polished and forget how grubby they were in daily service.

As the photo above shows the Septics also had the benefit of a much more generous loading gauge than we did, hence huge visually imposing looking locomotives.

And the Class 66s (3,250 hp) built by EMD being pulled by an GM-EMD Dash 8-40CM (4,000hp)

That’s 2 different trains. The lower one is a Russian design.

Came cross this site yesterday:

https://www.prrt1steamlocomotivetrust.org/news.php

In the same vein as Tornado in this country, a group in the US are constructing a T1 class 4-4-4-4 duplex loco- a 300+ ton, 6500hp monster, styled in the same way (although not quite as attractive)as the photo in the OP.

That T1 locomotive was designed by Raymond Loewy, who also designed the (IMO) equally ugly Studebaker Avanti.

But hats off to the guys building a new T1!

They want to beat mallards speed record with it too. Apparently unofficially they beat it back in 1948...

I recall seeing this picture some years ago.... the sort of train you'd catch when visiting Gotham City.

As the Wiki states there is a project in America to build a new T1 engine......and go for the 126mph steam rail speed record.
