Many years ago my wife and I went to an airshow at RAF Finningley.
Up against the rope that kept spectators off the runway was a pair of 'spotters'. They had set up a square perimeter with windbreaks to separate themselves from the spectators. Like the VIP section of a nightclub. They had chairs, camping equipment and tons of photography stuff. They wore bomber jackets covered in squadron insignia and various patches (no doubt awarded for spotter valour?), baseball caps with similar, and aviator sunglasses.
There was a Tornado waiting to take off, and the pilot waved to the crowd.
The wave was obviously meant just for the spotters, because they immediately straightened up, stuck their chins out, nodded and gave the pilot a thumbs-up sign that meant 'yes mate, we are in the same team, you and us, we know you don't care about the other spectators here, we know you recognize us.'
We still have a chuckle about it.

There are bus spotter who go to airshows but never actually enter the airfield, they just stand outside logging the coaches.
But they are amateurs compared with those 'rail enthusiasts' who try to find a hidden underground depot of steam engines supposedly stored as some kind of strategic reserve. Potholing urban exploring trainspotter conspiracy theorists. That level of commitment to nerdness is almost admirable.

Not a military pilot but do fly. The pilot entered the valley in a hard right turn, the initial view is of the underside of the aircraft so he had a good view of the ground. Rolling wings level he would see a rocky ridge straight ahead. At this point he could have jinked left to follow the valley but called it off, lit the burners and pulled into a climb. The Typhoon has an amazing rate of climb and rolling while climbing is the primary way of keeping a visual lookout and ensuring that see and avoid rules are maintained while VFR. Perfectly safe aviation.
