Will he circumnavigate the UK in an Avon Searider, undeniably a fantastic little boat and I think its just about capable in the right hands.....

This popped up as one of my recommendations - I follow cruisers and RIBs on YouTube. The guys is really fun to watch and his intention for this adventure is amazing. Not sure if want to attempt a lap of GB in one of those. I think I'd want something a bit more modern, with a deep-V hull. You could see the way some of the choppier seas completely washed over him.

Regardless, I love what he's doing and hope he can recover from the poor ending of episode 1. I think it's the first time I've seen anyone do a pass by of the Richard Montgomery.

Check out his other vids too. One where they dig the foam out of that ship, and the other where they test the Searider by visiting the offshore forts. He went for a quick swim in the shadow of those forts which really creeped me out for some reason.

That one is considerably longer than the one this YouTube guy is trying to go around GB in. Even so, in your vid, you can see the waves breaking over the bow - it seems too low for that kind of sea.

So they beached the boat, went ashore, pulled the boat up the beach... but instead of tying it up there for the night, they pulled it back down the beach, drove it out to sea a bit, anchored it and swam back to the beach.... then had to retrieve it the next day...

My thoughts too.

I wasn't sure if I was just being a boat handling bore, or rightfully concerned that they got it so wrong so quickly.

Just seem under prepared in every way possible.

Why, why why why, would your passage plan be to do that in the first place? Let alone the actual attempt!

Yes, prep seems poor, the camera cases a good example.

It is totally doable in that boat though. Southampton to Weymouth, Weymouth to Dartmouth, Dartmouth to Falmouth, PAdstow? Ilfacombe, Milford Haven and so it goes on.

He does seem to spend little time on research - in an earlier video he was constructing a boat from cardboard, and decided to use PVA glue to waterproof it with...only with the boat nearing completion did he discover PVA glue is water soluble

Only reason why not is how dangerous it can be and these guys seemed to be completely unaware of how to deal with the boat or weather.

Yes, I mean there is always a chance they will perish in seeking their goal. However presumably they see the risk as manageable at which point to and extent the individual makes their own choice. Same with fast road use of our cars, downhill mountain biking, cheer stunt groups, and any other activities.

I'm no apologist for the nanny state but having watched the video I posted above, the sea is somewhat unforgiving. Those guys (and gal) are all experienced RIBers and they found it hard going.

His seamanship and boat handling skills seem pretty sub-par to be honest. The whole yanking it up onto a beach and then it all going horribly wrong seems unnecessarily bad, but he's enthusiastic and giving it a go. He just seems to lack experience and knowledge. Neither impossible to get of course, but he just seems to need an experienced hand to bring him up to speed.

I am looking forward to the next episode though. There is nothing I enjoy more than messing about on a RIB.

I'm a non-boat person so his question about how'd you know in advance about such things as the firing range was interesting to me. Anyone know? Is it just experience to know what questions to ask about the various places around our coastline?

You look at charts and plan your passage accordingly.

Just watched both episodes, I really enjoyed it. Similar to Dangerous waters, which I also enjoyed.

He also took a trip to Red Sands in another video, which myself and a couple of friends have considered doing on our Jetskis. Red Sands is about 25 miles away by sea.

You check your charts, which have firing ranges marked on them ( he even mentioned that it showed on his GPS ), then you check online for when a range you will be crossing is active e.g. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/lulwort...
