Something that occurs to me, with all these countries closing borders, flights being cancelled, travel bans etc. this obviously means that many aircraft are now going to be grounded.

In "normal" times, most airports are pretty busy places already with most stands and gates occupied already, and a quick look at flightradar shows a hell of a lot of of planes in the air at the same time.

so - if we are grounding most flights, where are they going to park them all???

And how are they going to get the flight crews back home afterwards.

Same place they parked them on the 10th September nearly 19 years ago I suspect.

I think large places like Heathrow may go to single runway ops so freeing up some space on the runways. St Athan is taking some of ours too. But it is a major issue grounding aircraft.

There are loads parked at Norwich, including BA jets, which you don’t really see there at all.

Once all the stands are filled up, they will fit them around the normal stands, because if they aren't in operation they won't need access for passengers etc, so can be tucked in more closely. There was a good photo from when BA went on strike a while ago and all the planes were shoved up together at Heathrow.

Once the operations start again, the tug drivers can manoeuvre them back out again ready for operation.

Doncaster has a few Wizz A320/A321’s parked up. A couple of Virgin A330’s are joining them today.

How long can you park a 'commercial jet' for until it needs maintenance to be used again?

Jet 2 moved a plane from Newcastle to Prestwick yesterday. I can only assume they are parking it up as there is a lot of free space there.

8,500 planes in the air / with transponders on at the moment according to Flightradar24. Thats 1000 less than this time yesterday ...

7,100 this morning …

according to google on average there should be 9'700 planes in the air ….

Coming down (no pun intended) by about 1000 a day.

I assume cargo will continue flying as long as there is demand.

Newquay has lots of space, all the old Nimrod dispersal bays there could take a lot of aircraft.

BA flew 10 or so aircraft up to Prestwick the other day.

You'd get quite a few parked up at Upper Heyford if half of it wasn't already full of unsold new cars in storage.....as the runway there is still in good condition.
