Nice find, I hadn't looked at the experimental stuff - I stupidly assumed it'd all be inside somewhere.

An oddity I found - Camp Bastion, the biggest UK military base anywhere in the world at one point, no longer exists in Google Maps.

There's a faint outline thats only viewable at a distant level then it disappears if you zoom in from that level, and I'm assuming that was originally for understandable "security" reasons when the Camp was still operational, but the place was torn down in 2014 which make it odd that the "map ban" is still in effect.

EDIT - The Afghan Army and US Marine Trainers reused the base in 2018 onwards, that explains the map ban, didn't know that'd happened.

Perhaps you are seeing how well they cleared and tidied the base.

Acme Bastion map

That should take you to what looks a pretty recent photo, interestingly there used to be an entire town on the highway to the North, which has all but disappeared as well.

Camp Bastion at 06:30 UTC this today 8th July 2020 - Band 03 greyscale from ESA Sentinel 2.

The coverage looks a little odd - normal looking buildings and fields in the north-west of the site and off to the east, but the rest of it looks like it has been razed to the ground - no idea why....
