Flying alongside XH558

June 2015, think it was Church Stretton Airshow

In the full photo there's another flying adjacent to the opposite wing

Thanks in advance, it's been bugging me since used the photo as a desktop.

There was once a plan to hang a trio of Gnats under the wings of a Vulcan.

What would be the reason to hang the Gnats from the Vulcan?

I'd hazard a guess at them being used for defence of more Vulcans - take a flight of Vulcans to a target and bring your own air cover outside the range of the Gnat.

Parasite fighter. For when your escort doesn’t have the range to come with you. I don’t think it ever worked (by the time you’d stripped down the fighter so it fitted, it was rubbish).

Test pilots did prove it was possible to dock back with the larger aircraft, which must have been a bit hairy.
