Martin Bakers latest save, Hornet HN409 from 11 Squadron out of Rovaniemi, Finnish Air Force. Went down last Friday. Air force are continuing operations so it seems there is not a concerning fault that affects the whole fleet.

Quite a few land based fighters have them - not up to the stress of a carrier landing though, just for arrested landings if brakes have failed.

When we were in Corsica BI (ZJ810) had to use the arrestor hook on landing due to wheel brake issues. What a faff that was to sort out post safe landing.

I used to work on the Tornado Weapons Conversion Unit. We were quite a busy unit, far busier than your average squadron and we had aircraft take the RHAG about every 6 to 8 weeks. It was usually thrust reverser issues, so they'd drop the hook and take the RHAG.
As you say, it was quite a faff to zoom out to the runway in tractor and towing arm, push the aircraft back until you could free it from the wire, temporarily stow the hook back on the aircraft, then tow the aircraft back in. all while other aircraft were in the circuit, waiting to land.
The other issue was that aircrew would leave the radar on, so we would have to go to the med centre for checks, and the aircrew would supply a crate of beer to toast your crispy knackers!
