I used to go to waddington air show every year growing up, up until around 2013 ish. I’m considering taking my family to RIAT. Would I be left disappointed?
If you’ve not been to an air show for a few years I’d say no you won’t as it’s still a spectacle and you see aircraft doing their stuff; however somewhat diluted in my opinion to what it was. It is the probably the best airshow in the country for its variety and things to see and do. LotusOmega375D said:
We will only have general admission tickets and will arrive about 10.15/10.30h and stay till the end of the display. What would you experienced RIAT goers recommend bringing along for a comfortable day (eg. umbrellas, folding chairs, picnic rug, own alcohol?) and where would you suggest that we plant ourselves as a base location for the day?
Wouldn’t say I was too experienced but my 10p’s worth. Definitely folding chairs and a rug can be handy. I know you can take your own food but plenty of places to buy food but it can be expensive. Not sure on the alcohol so might be worth checking as bags do get searched. I’d try and park yourselves near the crowd centreline (VIP, members enclosures etc are usually on the centreline) but at the time you’ll get there there might not be space. Some like to stay around the start of the runway to see takeoffs/landings but I prefer as near to the centreline as possible. If it’s sunny take suntan lotion, raining umbrella. Just pray that low cloud isn’t forecast.

Not long now to RIAT. Will be going on Saturday and will be in the Cotswold enclosure (I believe from memory!). The aircraft list is looking pretty good, just noticed two B-52’s have been added, one static and one flying.
It looks like they are really pulling all the stops out this year, great to see some "Russian" Helicopters flying too (Mi17 and Mi24).There is usually an update on new additions on a Thursday, and I imagine that they will keep the best till last, so watch this space tomorrow I guess.

I can see the Daily Mail headlines now..." Doomsday plan is stationed at UK base under the pretense of an airshow due to Ukraine tensions"

B-52s have just pulled out, flying schedule usually online as soon as some kind folk buy a programme and post a picture of it, probably tomorrow or Thursday during arrivals.
E4-B is also a potential no-show.Rumours of a surprise appearance on Saturday afternoon although nothing specific has been mentioned.

A shame it's billed as a USAF celebration, will lead to disappointment despite what is an awesome display line up and quite a bit different from 'the norm'.Rumours of a surprise appearance on Saturday afternoon although nothing specific has been mentioned.
As far as I can tell it's just the Osprey left in terms of US flying involvement.
They're getting prepared for heat carnage I think - another e-mail today from the organisers :
Get yourself prepared for extreme heat!
As we said yesterday, it's going to be extremely hot this weekend with temperatures expected to exceed 30 degrees Celsius. This week, The Met Office has issued an extreme heat warning and, with large areas of concrete covering much of the airfield, it will be even hotter here at RAF Fairford.
With very limited shade available, it is vital that you wear a hat, bring enough drinks and sun cream to last the day. It's hot underfoot too so wear the right footwear so you stay comfortable out in the sun all day.
Before you arrive, check out the NHS website symptoms of heat exhaustion and the steps you can take to avoid it turning into full-on heatstroke. And when you get here, make sure you are looking out for yourselves and others.
