Perhaps the question answers itself.

Red Arrows retirement.

Where do they really fit in with a slimed down UK defense force.

Sorry I missed it was about the red arrows not just the hawk.

Can the red arrows use the T2?

I doubt the red arrows will go, no PM wants that happening on their watch.

Have we bought enough T2s to give the Red Arrows 10? I doubt it, I think they have only ordered 28 and I didnt see any announcement to buy more.
When the T1 goes, maybe the Red Arrows go, or maybe the training squadron at Valley has a part time team.
More important than the display team, how are the RAF and FAA going to conduct aggressor training with no T1s? I suspect that companies like Draken will end up being contracted to provide fast air?

They're reportedly retiring 25 Tranche 1 Typhoons from the front line by 2025 as well.

Paint 10 (9 + 1 spare) of them red, take off all the whizz-bang-you're-dead-I'm-not gubbins, and have the loudest formation aerobatic team ever.

Won't happen, but it would be absolutely epic.

The nine ship supersonic flypast at RIAT 2026 would probably induce the largest ever collective brown trouser moment in human history from the crowd.

Slimed? That’s a bit harsh!

Supposedly, and I have zero authority on this matter, the T2 is unsuitable for close formation flying.

Typhoon would be great, but no chance of it happening.

Texans if we're lucky.

Doubt there will be many events left worth displaying at by then anyway.

If you like to watch anything that’s a bit of a spectacle (F1, airshows etc), I’m afraid we’re a long way down the wrong side of the bell curve these days...

Any idea as to the rationale for this?

Provided an aircraft is sufficiently manoeuvrable, I'd guess the main thing that would make close formation difficult for a particular type is if it is relatively underpowered - if you're hanging 3 or 4 positions out in vic on the outside of a level turn, you need a decent margin of power over the leader in order to stay in position, unless the leader is flying at such a reduced power setting which means the corresponding aircraft on the inside of the turn ends up flying more slowly than is comfortable. What did they do to nobble the T2?

Is the T2 substantially heavier ? I can imagine it might be with a radar and numerous other Typhoon/F35 lead in avionics.

Can't find a side by side comparison from a reputable source - but I've seen some Wiki type websites quote 4480kg dry for T2 and 3650kg for T1.

WTF, the Blue Angels manage to do displays with the Super Hornet at 14.000+ Kg (well, will hopefully manage)

Two honking great afterburning turbofans (particularly on the new Super Hornets) go some way to making up for the extra lard.

My view, as an ex-RAF cynic, still in aviation.

The Red Arrows are pretty much irrelevant. The displays are tame and quiet, the aircraft outdated.
The cost to the RAF is huge, with few air shows left to make it all worthwhile.
Their safety record isn’t something to be proud of.

I’d rather see the money spent on the BBMF and some fuel for Typhoon and F-35 displays.
