Just spotted this pic on the recession thread but didn't want to derail and go off topic.

Can anyone explain just what purpose the huge array of radar domes and antennas serve here?

There must be a least 20 domes, aerials and antennas of all shapes and sizes, I can only think of 3 general requirements for them, communication, navigation and weather, so why the need for so many? Even military ships don't seem to require that many, at least not on open display.

The reason for having so many is usually redundancy and/or adding extra items for increased capacity.

e.g. you might have a close and far-ranged radar, which you then duplicate for redundancy and/or extra capacity in busy areas. In this case there are 3 radars on the top of the mast, I'd imagine they're the longest-range sets (higher up for greater line of sight).

Then satellite receivers for TV, again redundant, add a couple more for internet services at very least. And a bunch of aerials for VHF/UHF radios, again with redundancy built in.

On some boats some of them are just dummies to allow symmetry

The duplication is also to account for loss of signal on one side due the mast or stacks blocking the signal.

That; we have one V-sat dome, whoever is on watch gets abuse if they let the ship lie on certain headings as the bloody thing stops working and the football enthusiasts get excited if there's a match on.

Used to be one of my jobs when I was running IT for jack-up oil rigs - whenever the rig was moved I'd be on the first chopper out to the new site to get the dishes moved or realigned so that the Internet and TV worked again!
Spaces on the chopper were never so easy to find if I needed to get out there for another reason lol

If you can afford a boat like that I doubt you need porn. Just buy the real thing and pay enough so you get what you want.
