Wow, IIRC it really seems to be deteriorating since I saw it about 10 years ago. I have some pics somewhere, and some video, but I also have the most vivid memory of how haunting it was - I had that crawling, cold skin sensation when I first saw it - the missus of the moment was really scared - it was creepy.yikes Especially as we were the only people there.

Scariest photo I have taken. "Zombie" capsized south of St Katherine's point in the 2008 Round the Island Race. All crew rescued.

Why did she capsize and not right? Normally in a racing yacht it is the keel falling off but her's looks OK.

How many can you see?

Seven USN ships in a formation of fourteen ran aground at Honda Point, California on September 8th, 1923 with the loss of twenty-three men. Two other ships in the formation also suffered light damage.

One the backpackers amongst us will recognise. The maheno wreck on Fraser island, Oz.
I remember it well.the thing that sticks in my mind is that you can still see the tiles on the floor in what looks like a toilet/bathroom.

SS Richard Mongomery in the Thames Estuary near the Isle of Sheppey, still has over 1500 tonnes of high explosive on board yikes

One of my faves. One of those problems you really do just want to leave well alone until it goes away! Unless you live there, I guess.

How about RRS Discovery, caught in pack ice?

She's actually an Ultra30, basically a 30 foot dinghy with 8 trapezes raced in the 1990s but dead now as a class. I think I'm right in saying that originally she had no ballast on her "keel" (it would have been daggerboard) and the current owner had to add some so he could get a handicap rating and race. So basically there's not enough lead there to right her after a swim and the crew had no chance of righting her in what was some pretty rough water (although it does not look it there). However some modern beamy yachts will struggle to slef right after an inversion too as they are pretty stable upside down!

Here she is in happier times...

I believe the owner went and sank her shortly after the race as there was no way to recover her. When she went over, the rig broke, hence why she was abandonned inverted, rather than righted.

Some of the photos on this thread are so atmospheric. The challenge for me is to find them on Google Earth - thanks to the bridges in the photo above the tugboat is easy to find.

Not a photo as such, but a sonar image of HMS Royal Oak (a Revenge Class Battleship)sunk at anchor in Scapa Flow in 1939.

More images at http://www.hmsroyaloak.co.uk/survey.html

In this scan you can see that the bows were blown off by torpedo hits. Other scans show massive damage to the starboard side also caused by torpedos.

and Royal Oak as she was.
