Daft but genuine Q incoming...
What are the merits of building such a big yacht? Or is it just a case of 'because I can'?
Do people tour (insert correct term!) on these?
It's a pose isn't it. They're MILES more sexy than the big white 'Amaryllis' type yachts. What are the merits of building such a big yacht? Or is it just a case of 'because I can'?

Though I expect most who have an enormous sailing yacht might have an enormous motor yacht as well.

Wally Centos and the maxi sized Swans are fabulous things. Easily capable of world cruising and they also male very good off shore race boats... they do well over 20knts downwind, and will whisk you across the southern Atlantic in under 2 weeks, eating lovely food, in air conditioned comfort.
They are pretty much fully automated for cruising - hydraulic trimming controllable from the helm and in boom furling make them manageable for even short handed work.
The race series for them (such as the Maxi Rolex Cup) gives you access to a very exclusive social circle. They’ll have containers that are shipped round the world for racing - these will contain the racing sails and crew equipment etc, and all the cruising gear will go in the containers while they are racing - takes around 2-3 days to change them from cruising set up to racing set up.
They do need a pretty big crew to race them though (over 20), and most of these will be professionals, meaning you’ll need to pay them, as well as cover travel expenses, accommodation and food... not cheap!!
IMO, Infinitely more desirable than any floating gin palace.

Sitting in my hotel in Corfu and Mischief is moored just offshore. Pretty big thing. The chap must think he’s king of the roost. Then Bella Vita turns up. Makes Mischief look a bit inadequate.
Strange parking where us proles (admittedly in a 5 star hotel) can ogle them
A case of the ‘haves’ and the ‘have yachts’.

Its a 'Charter Boat' so goes where the guests want it to or the best place for them to embark/disembark. The chap who owns it is trying to set up a 'Superyacht Timeshare' scheme. Good luck with that...AstonZagato said:

Looks like their tender was leaving where you were so maybe they lunched at your hotel? Strange parking where us proles (admittedly in a 5 star hotel) can ogle them

Aviva was in Southampton last week. I built the Hunton tender that’s sat behind it so was nice to see it back local. (That was before Hunton decided to make all of us redundant and outsource any production. Since then they haven’t built a single boat)
The tender is an XRS43 but the only moulding on it that relates to any other XRS43 is the anchor locker lid, every single other moulding has been modified as the customer wanted a different layout with a longer cockpit and shorter foredeck. Shame about the awful bimini it is now sporting as well.

Having done Lefkada, Kefalonia and Paxos, Ithaca is one Ionian itch we want to scratch.
We spent an afternoon in Frikes back in the day, and were totally smitten.
We too were only on Ithaca for an afternoon. Sailed over from Poros. Ithaca's top of the list for next year now!We spent an afternoon in Frikes back in the day, and were totally smitten.
Seem to be a good way to ensure you get the cost of a repaint knocked off the sale price for any offers you get to move it on.
Oceanco did a good job with the black/white theme, but I think a lot of these blues are very taste subjective. I get the need to standout when the length arms race has escalated into cruise terminal berths, but it reaches the point where these paint jobs transform an otherwise impressive boat into something that makes you the laughing stock of Antibes.
