A brief Google seems to show that in earlier R44s the magneto switch in the 1 o'clock position was "Both", whereas in the later models the 1 o'clock position is 'Off', so maybe the combination of faulty magneto wiring plus muscle memory of the earlier version in the mag checks?

Although more likely the matting you normally walk on around the tents and displays at events like the Goodwood FoS when the ground has been a bit wet.
