Because EVERY advantage is worth having. I am sure the Typhoon is optomised for a BVR engagement - but any fighter pilot worth his salt will value having an agile fighter under him as well as fast one. Ask all those chaps who fly F-16s, F-15s and MiG 29s - and ask those pilots who are gladly giving up their Tornado F3s.
Also, ask those American pilots who rode into Vietnamese skies in their missile toting, non-agile Phantoms thinking they were going to have it all their opwn way.
The F3 pilots don't all get Typhoons. My Bro in law went from F3 to Hawk! Also, ask those American pilots who rode into Vietnamese skies in their missile toting, non-agile Phantoms thinking they were going to have it all their opwn way.

(separate incidents by the way )
just spent a week at Fairbourne/Barmouth, too much cloud for a lot of flying I suspect. It was better (noisier) last October
still good though

if he is an instructor a tour instructing is par for the course and potentially unrelated to tonka > typhoon fleet changes ( for pilots anyway vs nav /WSO)
So what are all the WSOs from air defence Tornados going to do when the same job is done by single seaters? Are there enough related slots in other aircraft to absorb them?Dr Jekyll said:

The rest? well there is a SDR on you know, cuts have to be made....................

It raises a very interesting question. Why do the Russians still see the strategic / tactical need for the PAK-DA programme. FA I can understand, but the west abandoned strategic bombers a long time ago.

Very interesting read, a serious worry for the Typhoon and the F-35, add this to decent AWACS support and competent pilots, negates the technological advantage, enjoyed by the Typhoon. http://www.iasa-intl.com/folders/belfast/Ruskie_Je...

Suppose its a bit like our Trident issue, prepare for all eventualities.
Maybe certain other countries who are in with the FA want replacements for their current bombers.
