I was in the Lufthansa lounge in the new terminal 2 a couple of weeks ago and the view of the airport is roughly the same perspective as the view from the old spectators area. The so called 'Queen's building' viewing area was so called because it was accessed from the Queen's building but was mainly the roof of terminal 2.

Is that the one (back then) that you could see both runways from, I remember as a child seeing a Viscount in front of me just arrived and taxiing in then turned around to the runway behind me to see Concorde take off.
You used to be able to see the two parallel runways 10/28 L&R (09/27) from the QB and also the now disused cross wind runway which ran between the other two. Only ever saw the cross wind runway used once as it couldn’t really cope with the amount of traffic - did see a light aircraft make an emergency landing on it too once.

The two in the (near) background are Dan Air Avro York's - the Twin Pioneer was quite a bit smaller and twin engined

There is a nicely preserved Dan Air York at Duxford.

Is there still a viewing area at Heathrow?
As others have said, the unofficial areas seem to be Myrtle Avenue for landings on 27L, Eastern Perimeter Road (near the BA engineering base) for 27R. When landing on 27 they switch runways at 3pm local for noise.

When landing 09L most people seem to go to the mound just North of T5 (by the "Balancing Reservoir" on Google Maps). 09R is only occasionally used for landing.

I'm told the new Garden Inn at T2 has a rooftop bar with views. Not sure if you need to be a guest to go up there though.

You know that scene in the Battle of Britain film where Goering asks his fighter aces what can he do for them?

Essentially, an evaluation unit for assessing captured Allied aircraft. We had one too - based at Farnborough and the source of information for this excellent book -

Interesting video but I'm convinced "Mark Felton" is a robot.

Photograph taken by me this week at the COMAC assembly facility outside of Shanghai. This is the only flying version of the Y-10, a reverse engineered 707. Some interesting strengthening plates under the wings where they initially didn’t get their calculations quite right.

One thing Chinese industry still hasn't managed - a functioning, economic civil airliner.

Yes, ARJ-21 is a drag queen. C919 still has to prove itself and there was only one in build when I visited the assembly hangar. But, it’s only a matter of time before they make it a success, the level of investment will ensure it.
