It's weird because everything is in just the right place, there is no concession to design over function. I therefore like to think it's a perfect flyer.That or they got one part of the design horribly wrong and had to move the rest around to stop it falling out of the sky.

Neither, it looks like a very low speed design. I note (wiki) that is is a French 1950s design for counter insurgency. So basically for flying slowly over Algerian rebels armed with bolt-action rifles, and dropping bombs on them. Not much use for anything else. Ayahuasca said:

Looks weird because of the very slim axial engine, you'd expect a wider piston engine in that era. The Bastan (and Astazou) were particularly slim turboprop/shafts. Compare that to say the very successful PT6 which had a seemingly odd reverse flow architecture so was a much "fatter" and therefore shorter engine. Turbomeca pretty much stuck to axial flow for all their engines.OscarJ said:
