Just had a look in my old copy of "Aircraft of the fighting powers" at more variations of the Dornier, the one type with big dive brakes at the rear for example it's quite unusual for a twin engined bomber to be put into operation as a dive bomber.

Here's a good photo of them opening on test.

Nice model of a Do17Z. As you can see, the Z variant had the larger canopy and crew compartment, unlike the original slimmer models.

And then the later wrap around nose.

It sort of parallels the development of the Ju88 family (another twin engined bomber with a dive bombing capability).

I wouldn't describe the flipping over of the aircraft on landing as a "ground loop". A ground loop usually means when the rear end of the aircraft swings around so that the aeroplane ends up facing the wrong way around - nut remains the right way up. This is a potential problem with all tailwheel aircraft and often occurs in crosswind situations.

Looks fairly intact from the sonar image although its on its back. Could make an interesting restoration project.

I think it is substantially there and a full restoration eminently do-able, given enough time and money. A number of aircraft have already been recovered from the sea bed and restored.

I think it would be great to see that Dornier restored. It's a shame some aircraft are restored that don't need it though. My favourite "old aeroplane in a museum" is the Corsair down at Yeovilton, which is in 'its original paint and very tatty, but original.

They are doing the same type of "archaeological" restoration on their F6F Hellcat. I spoke to the team leader of the project when I was at the Yeovilton Air Day a month or so ago.

Itr would be great to see a fully restored Do17/215/217 in a museum. It is a type almost forgotten now. I think the movie Battle of Britain gives the impression that the only bomber used by the Germans was the He111. Obviously, when the film was made in 1968, the only "German" bomber available was the Spanish CASA 211 derivative of the He111 so that is what they used. The Germans also used the Do17/215 and the Junkers Ju88 in that period.

The shame smile

They probably assumed it was a Hurricane and didn't realise they were going to be attacked from a rearward or sideways facing gun turret.

Yes, after all it is an aircraft in which people died, but I think that raising and restoring/displaying it would be an excelent memorial to everyone affected by these aircraft, on both sides. It would be another way of making the BoB more 'real' as more and more people who were directly involved are no longer alive.

Could have been worse. Could have been a Fairy Battle.

The Battle was a bomber, nopt a fighter. The Defiant was designed as a "bomber destroyer" but proved too heavy and slow to be effective. Even worse was the other turret fighter designed in this period, the Blackburn Roc.

Even so, the Battle scored the first air-to-air victory of WW2 for the RAF IIRC?

"cough"
"On 20 September 1939, a German Messerschmitt Bf 109 was shot down by Battle gunner Sgt. F. Letchard during a patrol near Aachen, marking the RAF's first aerial victory of the war."
"cough"

Anyway, sorry Eric, just trying to be droll and obviously failing. Just thought it was well known that the Battle was possibly the worst hunk of junk to fly in WWII.
However the attacks on the Albert Canal and the bravery displayed really does bring a lump to the throat. Some commentators have compared it to an flying Charge Of The Light Brigade.

I wonder if the other two chaps are still with us?
