Anyone know much about biltong?

I got some from a fair in Wales a year or so back, was amazing. Dry sort of stuff, chewy, tough, really spicy and tasty. However all i see in the shops is the soft gummy stuff with little taste.

Any online sellers worth using?

Indeed. Suzman's.

This is the stuff sold in Selfridge's, Harrod's, etc.

I'm a huge fan of the 'chilli bites'.

Used to live in Botswana - they had some great Biltong there - mainly from SA. You can buy the little bags of thin stuff in some shops, but I miss the great big tough stick cultivated from the leg of a nice Kudo or something - not sure where you could buy that stuff in the UK. Would sit for ages just gnawing, sucking and chewing the stuff - happy days. Good luck in your se4arch!

The wife loves the stuff, plenty of SA relatives. She buys hers from a shop in Mk called cruga. Seen it in tesco too. But the shop stuff is much better. They have a website too and I'm sure they do mail order

Really? yikes

There isn't a chance in Hell I'd buy a loose food product on Ebay.

Is it really any different than buying something from a stall at a fete though?

I've bought tablet from eBay before (a Scottish delicacy... best way to describe it is a bit like fudge, but with the texture of Kendal mintcake). It was home made, well packaged, and very very nice smile

+1 for Susmans - In a wonderful coincidence the shop is located on the area I work in so I can just drop in. I couldn't tell the difference between the 'standard' Biltong they sell and the real deal from SA. The garlic Biltong is also nice though I thought the Peri-Peri could have been spicier (but then I like food VERY hot so it would probably be fine for a 'normal' person.)
Only snag is it doesn't keep well. though if you know Biltong you'll know that's not a particularly big problem smile

I love Biltong, but recently tried Snap Sticks, which I think I now prefer.

Get ours from www.biltongdirect.co.uk

theres loads of south african shops in the uk, depending on where your based just do a quick search and you should find at least 50 pages of SA related items from biltong to sweets.

I haven't had any for a while.. Reading this thread means that I'm going to go and buy some tomorrow! smile

Love the stuff! There's a shop in Acton that I used to buy it from. It was good, and cheap, though last time I went there, the prices had shot up. frown

Yeah, yeah, was on a phone last night smile

The place that I go to is Chapman's in Baldock. They have a web-site but I think that a visit to to store is more satisfying (albeit expensive) - http://chapmansbutchers.com/

EDIT: They sometimes get Kudu in for the game biltong, and make up game kebabs
- very nice.

This place seems to have the spices and stuff - http://www.biltongbox.com/

And here's how one can make a biltong box - http://www.pharside.co.uk/everyday-stuff/how-to-ma... Although, provided you can get hooks, rails, and a light set up, one can use a cardboard box.

"You can never have too much Biltong, just not enough friends."

I found out recently that one can freeze Biltong. Defrost in the fridge for a day and then let it get to room temperature.

No connection with them, just like the taste.

Thanks for the info smile

I'll try some of the websites out.

For reference... how much is 250g of biltong? Doesn't sound very much.

Is that because small amount, or because you're a biltong consuming fiend?
