I ventured in to Aldi last night and bought their chicken jalfrezi plus poppadoms and come mango chutney
I was pleasantly surprised - the jalfrezi was pretty good.
Was this a pre-made one? The Jalfrezi in a jar, the ones with a spice pot on top, is far hotter than any Jalfrezi I've ever had. Too hot for my taste.I was pleasantly surprised - the jalfrezi was pretty good.
I have bought the Lidl one for tonight to compare. My Lidl has just moved everything around except the wine. New freezers and bins for the bread. I had to wander around far too long to find everything but it is an improvement.

£300 3D Printer in Aldi. I know nothing of technical capabilities of these but would this be any good for an old man who works in aviation/builds model planes?

've just opened a bottle. There's nothing to say what it is exactly other than red wine, classification wise it looks to be nothing more than table wine. It's not bad stuff, but I think the £5 Peuceta Primitivo from Lidl is much better.
That was a great tip, Balmoral, thank you! Grabbed a bottle on your recommendation and could not believe the quality for a fiver. Light enough to drink alone, yet robust enough to complement a be-gravied meal.
Agreed about Lidl, we've had some horrors. So far not had much issues from Aldi, but not much sourced there. Tend to patronise a really good farm shop.
As others have said it's not just the discounters, some occasional issues with both Tesco and Sainsbury's, Waitrose much worse ime.
Sort of off topic, what do we reckon about Tesco chopping the fresh counters? Butchers, probably choice on the high st. Fishmongers non existent round us. Deli, bad move getting rid of that imho. Seems to me they're chasing the Lidl/Aldi model, and going to fail.

Our lidl quite often has mouldy fruit on display.
But the other day i paid £3 for four nectarines from sainsburys and one of them was totally rotten on the bottom. So its not just lidl/aldi
O/H bought some 'easy peelers' from M&S and found the same, one was rotten on the bottom. About five days later she bought some more and again one was rotten. Grotty fruit is found everywhere, it seems. But the other day i paid £3 for four nectarines from sainsburys and one of them was totally rotten on the bottom. So its not just lidl/aldi

JUST DON'T BUY ANY OF ALDI FRUIT.
At a guess, it is days old when they put it on the shelf.
We get fresher fruit coming back to the Morissons recycle centre for disposal (compactor)
Fruit that's days old before you buy it, quelle horreur! At a guess, it is days old when they put it on the shelf.

An employee of a Bradford based chain store makes important statement about very successful competitor.
Guaranteed no COI, so it must be true.

I find Aldi has short dates on a lot of stuff, particularly fresh meat.....
I have a suspicion that such things are very store dependant. For stores that are in the suburbs the customers are more likely to be buying 'ingredients' (ie. fresh meat and veg) as part of a 'big shop' but town centre stores are more likely to have customers buying ready meals or a couple of essentials for use that day, so the fresh stuff sits on the shelf longer.Gassing Station | Food, Drink & Restaurants | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
