Can’t speak for Lidl but having recently switched back to Aldi after being fed up with the amounts we were spending in Morrisons, we’re easily saving 25-30% a week.

I've been shopping at Lidl a fair bit recently as I've just bought an electric car and lidl is right next to a free charger smile

I love the croissants, and with a bit of melted cheese and couple of slices of ham - delicious.

The prices aren't cheap though. Struggling to find cheap products. My shop is generally fresh fruit and veg, breads, cooked meats and chilled meats (don't buy frozen very often) and the prices are dear.

£1.99 for 120g of ham. £9.98 for 8 lamb chops, and they weren't even that good (quite chewy rind which I had to give up on and spit out it was so chewy)
Ham is good.

Got 3 lighters for a pound though, that was ok and some cheap firefighters to try out.

I'm struggling to see the attraction though - limited selection and high prices. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, or maybe I just need to shop at Aldi lol!
120g of ham in Tesco is £3 (Finest branded, though I'm sure you didn't buy Lidl's cheapest)

Maybe you don't shop widely enough to realise how expensive food is. There's been a reasonable upward shift over the last 12-18 months.
Aldi and Lidl are both well below the 'big' supermarkets.
I bought the most expensive ham, and it was nice. £2 for 120g is fair. I would buy tesco finest when it's on offer for £2, otherwise, a mid range one for £2.

I've tried the cheaper lidl ham but as you would expect, not as tasty. I can buy cheap ham at the petrol station too - you can buy cheap ham anywhere to be honest, Tesco, sainsbury's etc....the point I'm making - lidl isn't any cheaper than anywhere else for quality fresh food.

Whether it's a Sunday dinner, stuff for the kids lunches or a midweek meal - I can't find any cheaper products v Asda or Tesco. And the selection is a lot less. I've only been in half a dozen times now, but I'm not spending any less, and in the case of Sunday dinner, it actually cost me more compared to the Tesco equivalent when I did a lamb chop dinner. (Plus the lamb was poor quality)

I went to Sainsburys during the week as I needed a cashpoint and popped in to buy a few things we'd agreed we needed; they came to just over £55. O/H gave me a roasting when I got home - she seems to know the price of just about everything we buy regularly - she reckons I over spent by eight or nine pounds over Aldi / Lidl.

So you agree that decent ham is £2 in Lidl and £3 in Tesco. But maintain that Lidl isn't any cheaper because Tesco occasionally has their's at £2 on a special offer.

Weirdo.

That’s the thing, I think most of the saving for most people comes from an accumulation of small gains.

Only just started shopping at Aldi again but a few of the savings I picked up on compared to other supermarkets were cut herbs, maybe 39-59p at Aldi compared to 79-89p, ground coffee £1.39 or something vs £2.29, decent bottle of wine £4.99 vs £6.99 etc.

On average we’re spending £80-90 at Aldi vs £110-£120 at Morrisons.

Why the insult?

I buy midrange ham in Tesco for £2 which is on a par with the lidl top line ham at £2. Tesco finest is better than the lidl one but it's more expensive so I only buy it on offer.

I'm posting my observations from shopping there so no need to throw insults around. The fact is, fresh food isn't cheap at lidl...that's all I'm saying. I was expecting it to be cheaper and I was wrong, that's all.

I'll look at other items next time I'm in but I'm thinking lidl make their money on fresh food and get people through the door for some eye catching adverts/prices but actually, they're much of a muchness against everyone else.

The one thing I found cheaper was melons - 10p cheaper for honeydew....but no cantaloupe option (which my daughter likes)

Just bought a pack of the snackrite Wasabi peanuts. Im a big wasabi pea and salted peanut fan so thought these would be delicious, but I cant make my mind up. They have a definite wasabi kick on only one peanut - but the nut itself has an almost honey glazed sweetness. If it was just plain salted underneath the wasabi it would be ten times better to my palette

Not food but they have an excellent curry recipe book in the aisles of wonder, Dan tombs the curry guy, costs a fiver and is packed full of just about every curry recipe there is.

Cant wait to get stuck into it. Our local curry houses and takeaways are quickly turning to crap (and I live in Bradford).

Maybe Lidl aswell? But they're in Aldi. Stacks of them in my local, no coronavirus panic buying effect, although it would go well with all the loo rolls.

Damn you - just bought 2 of the 3 books they have of his based on your recommendation!

Mind you, the lovely checkout girl who's previously ignored my advances struck up conversation over the book haul... Might start another thread on how I should I ask her over for dinner! biggrin
