I do have a theory that some people in our area think of Aldi and Lidl as the poormans choice, these image conscious people shop at Asda as its more expensive to shop (there is no other supermarket within 20 minutes drive).
Well they are cheaper and known as the discounters? They won't be winning the Waitrose crowd on average.

I used to think like that, but mostly because I incorrectly assumed their products would be cheap quality, a bit like Farmfoods or Jack Fultons etc.We also didn't have any close enough to us without having to drive past the main brand supermarkets. But then when an Aldi upend up on our doorstep we tried it and were impressed.

Aldi is now our main default store, with occasional trips to the main branded supermarkets. When I drive past an Aldi or Lidl I now wonder what useless delight I might want to buy from their aisle of dreams.

They have though haven’t they? Hence they’re doing amazingly well and Waitrose are struggling? They’re certainly trying to cater for them.

Yep. Aldi broke through that ceiling quite a few years ago with things like their wine buying, ski-wear and the Specially Selected range.

And the introduction of in-store bakeries is really helping Lidl to do so too, their wine also tempting many affluent shoppers away from the usual suspects.

Maybe it's different around here but it's very much the budget supermarket. I love the discounters and wouldn't want to head into any of the bigger supermarkets, I find them terribly boring.

Weirdest Lidl scratchcard win amount, evah! All previous wins have been between 25p and £2, in regular increments. This time... £9.26!

silly but gratefully received!

One of the local poundstrretchers has been taken over by a FarmFoods. Anything worth giving a go? I've never been to one and they don't seem to list their food or offers online.

Farmfoods (and Jack Fulton - mentioned above - which has recently been acquired by Poundland) aren't necessarily poor quality.

A lot of their stuff is branded clearance/ongoing value packs. I also developed a range for Farmfoods a few years ago that included the best-specced own label products in the market. The same ingredients as stuff we made for the major grocers but with higher percentages of the key value bits.

If you're going to try Farmfoods its worth printing off one of the vouchers that they usually have online for £2.50 off a £25 shop/£5 off a £50 shop etc.

If nothing else it's great value to grab a couple of slabs of 330ml pop while you're there. They usually have Pepsi Max, Vimto, Irn Bru etc.

They sell a Swedish microwave pizza called Billy's for cheaper than you can buy them in Sweden! Never seen them anywhere else in the UK. Soft drinks and ice creams are very good value for money.

Is this in Aldi? I picked up something for £5.99 - is that it?

I’ve always loved this from Aldi but now it’s taking the piss. Inflated price and only 4 pieces in a box. Used to cost less for twice the weight and 12 pieces.

Frozen confit duck legs.

For the price, awesome.
Lidl?
Sorry.

Aldi.
Why do they need to freeze confit duck legs? Tinned ones keep for years preserved in their own fat.
Sorry I don’t think they are confit after all but still very nice! They do exist

Farmfoods do a decent Takeaway range of chicken pieces, including Salt & Pepper chicken. I buy their Takeaway Crispy Shredded Chicken and make my own sauce for it, just like the Chinese takeaways do...
