Tennents.

Seriously.
I'm all ears.
Tennent's Lager (Cold) served correctly is one of the great pints.

Doesn't travel very well, needs to be sampled in Scotland.
Is the incorrect longitude the reason tramps in London fall over after having drunk it, then?
No, just fall-down laughing at all the cockerney spivs. wink

Lovely stuff - drank a stupid amount of the stuff when I went over to Germany last year. Only ever seen it once in this country though.
Delicious, isn't it? biggrin

Rothaus brewery is based in the Black Forest, and I usually drink it in Baden-Wurttemburg, where it is widely available. I have never seen it in a UK supermarket. Specialist shops for sad beer geeks (like me!) are probably the best bet.

From a tap, for me it has to be Asahi, as someone else said, it's a well balanced lager. Can't go wrong with a cold Stella either.

From a bottle, I like Cobra, and I recently tried Staropramen. Enjoyed that too.

Out of a tap, and in this country, a pint of temple from the porterhouse is probably the best I've had. Not far behind would be moretti, or cobra from our local indian.

The imported swing-top bottles of grolshe were also like nectar compared with anything else bearing the name. Don't see it so much any more.

What wrecks my head is when you walk into a pub and they have half a dozen cooking lagers on tap carling/kronenberg/carlsberg/fosters etc all lined up and then, if you're lucky the nearest thing to anything drinkable is the child freindly 4% version of becks... why? Just, why?

For cans, special mention for oranjeboom, where stocked tends to be cheaper than the english dishwaters yet is a damn decent imported dutch drop.

Meantime Helles, 4.4%

Honeyed lemon nose; crisp, full-bodied mouth feel with delicate lemony notes, dry grainy finish.

Freedom Pilsner, 5%

Fine bitter lemon and grainy toasted white bread nose; soft mellow citrus on the palate with a lingering bitter finish.

Cotswold Dark Lager, 5.5%

Dark gleaming amber; nose is a soothing confection of milk chocolate and toffee; milk chocolate, vanilla, mocha coffee on the palate; lasting dry finish.

West St. Mungo, 5%

Soft floral nose with undercurrent of caramel. Good body, dry bitter finish.

Leeds Brewery Leodis, 4.5%

As dark as treacle; resiny hop with wisps of smoke on nose; the palate is smoky, bitter and dry.
Here's someone who has a clue.

I'll add:

'Donder en Bliksem' from Brouwerij de molen.

Some of the other lowest common denominator crap on this thread is frankly revolting. Two top tips when looking at buying 'foreign' lager

1. Is it actually brewed abroad or is it made under licence to remove as much money as possible from people who don't have a clue?

2. Does it have any adjuncts in it ie maize like Stella which is of course, complete ste, with maize added in order to save the s that brew the st a load of money while they call it a 'premium' lager.

re: rothaus, I've just had a shedload of their marzen, pils and heffe and it was all good if not amazing.

Estrella/Moretti is piss they don't even wash floors with in Spain/Italy yet price it at £4.50 and every mug buys and raves about it. It's st.
The Estrella/Moretti we get in the UK is somewhat different to what you'll find in the country of origin though. And certainly, the scenery adds something there!

When I was last in Italy, the others I were with were buying Peroni as 'the good stuff' and stocking up on cheap Birra Moretti for drinking through the day. The Peroni was as mediocre as can be, nothing unusual for a Peroni. The Moretti was fantastic though. How I scoffed as everyone scrambled for the inferior Peroni. I had a pint of Birra Moretti when I returned to England, in a rather lacklustre San Lorenzo restaurant. It was rubbish, nothing like the stuff in Italy.

Peroni is always a funny one though. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with it, yet it's hilariously overpriced in the UK. It seems to be the choice of posers who want to be seen sipping a 'premium' lager and are happy to pay the extra for the branded glass. Taste wise, there is nothing to really recommend about it other than that it's 'refreshing'.

In the UK I'd try and go for a Sapporo if I could get it, and a Lowenbrau or Kronenbourg if I couldn't.

It's not as bad as Fosters, Carling etc etc. I prefer ale to lager, but I am always amused when I go to a decent country pub with loads of real ale and cider on tap and see someone scrambling for a glass of the house piss.

.
Are you aware that the Peroni we get here is one of their premium lagers and not the Peroni that is in general sale in Italy?

According to internet sources

Yes, I had seen you mention that earlier. And I don't think it's much cop here or abroad, to be fair.

Heineken is brewed here in the UK.

But I think the two beers you called piss, Moretti and Estrella, are imported.

Well it's still a better beer than both if those.
