I am far from rumless, but currently working in Barbados which is giving me ample chance to sample some new discoveries.
Current top pick is foursquare 9yr old rum cask. A very flavourful and well rounded rum, I think more than a couple of these will be coming home for xmas gifts.
Also loving el dorado 25yr old (at a quite reasonable 15usd a go) and now just looking where I can buy it at a sensible price as, nice as it is, it's not worth 8x the price of the 15.

I'm happy this thread has resurfaced at this time, as a little guidance is needed for a Christmas treat.
See, a few years ago the local Aldi were selling El Dorado 15 for (about) £26 a pop and - being a massive rum fan - I bought one. It was bloody sensational, and even mrs v who doesn't usually touch the stuff loved it. Since then, Aldi haven't stocked it but obviously it is freely available online.
I've noticed that a Ron Zacapa can be bought for the same price as the El Dorado, and I've heard good things about Zacapa. So the question is : do I get another El Dorado 15, or try the Ron Zacapa? If it helps, I tried a Mount Gay XO last year in a hotel and - to me - it wasn't all that if I'm honest. Budget is £40 - £50.

That's for a glass with ice at a low key bar.
I don't rate zacapa and its certainly not in the league of el dorado. I'd go with diplomatico reserva as having a similarly robust and rounded taste, or flor de Cana 18 of you fancy something lighter and more floral
I've not tried that before, and reading the tasting notes on Whisky Exchange it ticks quite a few boxes.I don't rate zacapa and its certainly not in the league of el dorado. Ordered!
The Diplomatico arrived today, and I'm still looking forward to sampling it over the festive period.
The reason it appealed when reading the tasting notes was that (yes) it was on the sweet side, but didn't detract from the fruity notes. My daily glug of choice is an Appleton Estate amber, which very much puts fruit at the pointy end so something a little sweeter didn't set alarm bells ringing.
Anyway.

Now see I'm really not a fan of the Diplomatico. It's far too swert - to the point where it tastes like it's been artificially sweetened to me. It's more like a rum liqueur.
That's because it has been. So have a lot of rums, even at the top end. There are very few rules regarding rum production unfortunately. https://schlimmerdurst.net/2015/09/08/tell-me-swee...

I found it pretty sweet, a bit too much, and OTT for a spirit of this price and apparent grade. I always feel residual sugar is used as a mask for poor quality as it makes it easy to drink. https://schlimmerdurst.net/2015/09/08/tell-me-swee...
The rest of my bottle went into some mojitos with fresh mint from the garden, which although were very nice, was a bit of a waste of expensive rum. Will be looking for something for Xmas this year, along with a nice armagnac.

Been on the Swedish and Finnish Gov't sites having a nosey. Mount Gay XO isn't listed unfortunately (only Eclipse is listed on Alki and it has none added), so not sure how much is added. I can't see it being much though as it is considerably less sweet than many of the others in the same bracket.
Reinforces my desire to try Foursquare though
another on the diplomatico for the festive perpetual boozing... reserva exclusiva. After having tasted it at a whisky show (weirdly) and really enjoying it, i bought a bottle each for a few of my mates for my wedding. They all really liked it but i hadn't had any more since that original tasting so I am looking forward to it.
I've got 5 bottles of Bacardi 151 here at home, gathering dust. Mrs T is from the Philippines, and it's a tenner a bottle over there so purely out of interest I picked a couple up, then the sister in law thought I must like it and brought some over when she came to visit...
Having tried it, it's awfully strong and not very nice to be honest, can someone suggest a good way to drink it or a good mixer?.

Coke is the classic rum mixer, if you like fruity drinks I like it with orange juice and pineapple juice. Having tried it, it's awfully strong and not very nice to be honest, can someone suggest a good way to drink it or a good mixer?.
