My current sipping rums.

The Gosling is quite good - I got it on special at MoM. Tastes nice and dark and not overly sweet.
BrewDog spiced rum - yeah, no. I love the BrewDog gins and think they're astonishing value at their present price point but this does not work for me. It's way too acidic for my tastes.
Navy Island - a really good intro to funky Jamaican rum flavours. But if you're used to Smith & Cross or Hampden etc. it might be a bit light.

I got a bottle of Ron Zacapa Negra rum this week and can’t wait to crack it on Friday!
I picked a bottle of this up earlier in the year, I'm a big zacapa fan but I'm not sure if this one is for me. I suppose I should have known given my dislike for smoky whisky to be fair haha.Of course, the tasting kit (6 samples, ginger beer and pre made cocktail) was £30, I collected it from the shop but they deliver locally (6 miles) for free and nationally for £8.
Glencairn glasses are my own.
10% of any purchases of the bottles from the tasting from their shop hence the purchase.
£150 for the two bottles right enough so that’s the real cost of it hahahha
Real cost

What are the others like? Really enjoying this and ready to try more at this level. oddman said:
Let us know how you get on with the Diplomatico I'd be interested to hear how the sherry influences an already very sweet rum
I'd like to try sherry from Diplomatico casks
I tried it at the tasting. It's very nice albeit not as nice as the 2004, which in turn is not as nice as the 2000! I'd like to try sherry from Diplomatico casks

Has anybody here tried Costco’s “Kirkland” spiced rum?
Don’t fancy buying 1.75L if it’s not any good.
I'm sure when I was there two weeks ago they were doing 1L of Kraken for £17 Inc VAT.Don’t fancy buying 1.75L if it’s not any good.
That's where my money would be going for a cheap mixer. Can imagine the Kirkland will be a bit Captain Morgan.

It tastes like tequila I thought. Out of the many Scottish rums that have been released in recent years NB is really the only one working for me.

Makes a lovely rum old fashioned
When drinking neat I've usually got an ice cube or two in the glass as well. I know this is frowned upon, particularly in Whisky circles but for me it does help the drink last a bit longer and stretches out the flavours as it's gradually diluted.
For the poster slightly further up, my old fashioneds (whiskey and rum) I make up a sugar syrup with dark muscovado sugar (Billingtons from Sainsburys is pretty nice) - gives it an extra caramel flavour and darker colour you don't get from plain white sugar syrup. If you really want to spice it up a bit, add a few cardamom pods (and cinammon bark, nutmeg or mace, orange peel, cloves, star anise etc etc) when boiling up the syrup, and filter it out when bottling.
I was given a nice bottle of Appleton estate 12 yr produced in Jamaica for my birthday this month which I'm looking forward to trying, and also some spiced rum from Devon (a blend from Guyana, Trinidad & Tobago, aged in barrels over here), from the Lyme Bay Winery people (I'm more familiar with their Jack Ratt cider, their wine is not so great...). I'm sure that will go down a treat now the weather is getting colder and things start getting Christmassy!
