M&S used to do their own label Bajan which was about the £20 mark.
I haven't been to one in nearly 12mo though so no idea if they still do it. Bit on the sugary side from memory, but fine as necking rum or for mixing. Flor De Cana always seems like good value for mixing as well
Flor De Cana 5yo is £15 in Tesco just now.I haven't been to one in nearly 12mo though so no idea if they still do it. Bit on the sugary side from memory, but fine as necking rum or for mixing. Flor De Cana always seems like good value for mixing as well

Has anyone spotted any real hidden gems for dark/golden mixing rums? I thinking supermarket own brands or the like...
M&S have Plantation Gran Anejo at £28 which is a decent drop for mixing and sipping with a cigarVolvolover said:
Just found this thread after joining and am a bit of a rum lover myself. Started off on the Eldorado years back soon realised the 12 is the pick of that range but even so the added sugar and glycerine has become more noticeable to me the more i drink it.
I have become somewhat evangelical about pure Bajan rum in the way Richard Seale describes it https://rumauctioneer.com/news/moment-foursquares-...
The first time I had a non filtered rum it was as though i'd had a layer of wax removed from my palate.
I still drink some other stuff, particularly when friends are round but Foursquare/Doorlys are my go to.
The current rum section of the drinks cabinet :-)
As I’ve got Bajan parents (one born and raised the other a full time resident since ‘89) I’ve spent lots of time around Bajan rum and had had some great experiences with R. Seale. He has really made himself a bit of a god in the rum circles. St. Nicholas Abbey make some incredible drops so I’d suggest you try some next!
I’ve lost count the amount of rum tours I’ve done at Mount Gay (worth it every time for the cocktails at the end) and Cockspur (right on the beach!) but it gives a great insight and the chance to get hold of some limited run stuff.
Both of these were lovely
And these two are ever present in the cupboard

I got a friend a bottle of this the other day fromSainsbury’s and he said how nice it was so thought I’d really better try it for myself, very tasty as a mixer but not sure it’s something I’d drink straight
I'm currently in love with estery Jamaican rums and these are the additions from the last month or two.
The Bajan rum posts above inspired me for the Veritas - it's a blend of Four Square and Hampden and really nice it is too. Made a dacquiri with it last night and it was gooooood.
The Dunderhead was super cheap (£21) and not too bad at all, maybe a little bit too much sweetness and spice for me but certainly good enough to sip. The Xamaca is a step above that.

The post above about daiquiris got me thinking about cocktails and more importantly punch!
Rum Punch - Bajan style
Really simple to make and is brilliant for parties as the recipe can just be scaled up to suit!
The recipe rhyme....
1 of sour
2 of sweet
3 of strong
4 of weak
Dash of bitters
Sprinkle of spice
Served with plenty of ice
The sour is lime juice, ideally freshly squeezed but the bottled stuff can be used.
The sweet is a simple syrup. Put equal parts sugar (I use Demerara) and equal parts water in a pan and boil until it’s just a liquid. Let it cool down to room temperature.
The strong. Rum! Dark Bajan rum. Eclipse works and is cheap but Cockspur is a favourite for punch.
The weak is just water although you can substitute this for other non alcoholic beverages like ginger beer.
Bitters. Angostura. 3 or four dashes.
Spice. Ground nutmeg. Just a sprinkle.
Add a cherry if you are feeling fancy.
I usually make up 8 litres and store in 2 litre bottles in the fridge.
Lots of ice. Oh and a beach is preferable

I’ve always wondered how awkward those zoom tastings are? I’d find it incredibly cringeworthy but fascinating at the same time!
Did Richard have anything interesting to say?
Pre lockdown I'd do quite a few tastings at the shop but since social distancing they've moved online and there's parts of it I actually prefer, both have their pro's and cons.Did Richard have anything interesting to say?
Richard was just talking answering some questions and talking about some of the new things in productions which sound quite interesting.
