Always butter the outside. Makes it like fried bread instead of toast (and stops it sticking too)

Put tin foil over the plates of the toaster, that eliminates the mess/sticking issue completely.

Too much faff. Butter goes in the pan.

Cleaning an electric sandwich toaster after use could appear in "The worst job you have ever had" thread.

Yep, hence why one that we bought years ago was soon confined to the back of the cupboard and subsequently chucked out and also hence why I have told my youngest (soon to be 19), that she is not buying one as a) it will stink the house out b) I know she won't clean it up properly, no matter how much she says she will and c) she will be bored of all the faff in a week and it will go into an already full cupboard.

Bloody stupid things.

If creating a cheese-based toastie, I find a small amount of thinly-cut cheese on the outside of the bread is a very interesting addition.

I bought a toastie machine for uni and I don't recall ever giving it more than the odd wipe every few years. That was some 18 years back. Still in regular use today and it doesn't smell in the slightest.

My favourite and own concoction is peanut butter, cheddar and camembert as a filling, delicious.

Can't you do it the same way you would do anything similar? With a panini or foreman grill, a wet kitchen roll wipe down whilst still hot and job done.

It has a much higher burning point than butter and you can't tell the difference. I was at a street food festival and the cheesy toast shack used mayo on their toasty's.

Well I admit I have not tried it - I just imagine it to go all congealed and weird like if you leave mayo on your plate and the next day it's kinda all dried up and hard...

Not at all. It just fries the bread.

Nah mayo shouldn't be cooked, it goes weird.

Buttering the outside of the bread for a toastie is a must though.

Sarah and I must have been imagining how nice the results are then. We've been doing them like this for years.

This thread got me thinking and i dug out my toastie maker today, buttered the outside of the bread and filled it with tinned ravioli a bit of the sauce and cheese on top, sprinkled some bacon bits and onion bits on too and was bloody lovely. tinned ravioli and bread both from Aldi too.

For a deluxe cheese toastie, wrap the sandwich in streaky bacon and fry it in a pan.
