I know of a few cash only takeaways that still exist. Some of them don’t do deliveries either but still manage to get decent custom.
Much like Uber causing tax issues for taxi drivers the likes of Just Eat have caused issues for those takeaway owners who liked to cook their books.
It's my hope that the adoption by small retailers of the myriad card payment solutions will eventually kill off the awful businesses (takeaways, corner shops) who either don't accept card or have a ridiculous minimum spend.Much like Uber causing tax issues for taxi drivers the likes of Just Eat have caused issues for those takeaway owners who liked to cook their books.
When the bloke who delivers a small trolley of brownies to our office on a Friday can take contactless payment for a £2 brownie, there's no excuse for the crappy corner shop telling me I need to spend £10 before I can use a card to buy a bottle of water.

I suspect card / online sales have a big part to play. Cheap food is great but when the profit margins are slim a lot of these places relied on the fact they paid little in the way of tax and NI (not saying I agreed with that but that was a genuine business model they used in the 80s, 90s and even early 2000s). These days its virtually impossible to run a business like that and that's probably having a big impact.

Please cut out Just Eat wherever possible, we'll all lose in the long-run as takeaways have to price-in their huge fees into menu prices.

Cut out Just Eat but pay by card?

I agree with cutting out just eat if you have a local place you go to regularly but it’s really useful when travelling and that also means that take outs get more business from travelling people than they ever would have done before just eat. I don’t see it as a complete evil and at the end of the day if a take out doesn’t want to pay the fees then don’t go on it. Just don’t moan about loss of business if this is the action you take. I use JE for the menu and then contact the establishment directly. Having said that, I don't travel for work so rarely use JE at all, as I have all the local places' menus in the flat..
Exactly. In that respect use local but if you’re travelling city to city of international it’s great and gives them business that would otherwise go to horrible hotel room service. My local take outs have flyers they put in the bag if you have used JE and live locally asking you to order by phone and offering a discount / free food. The problem with that is that some people use JE to not have to talk to anyone.

Yup, a leisurely menu browse and a few clicks, and being able to use card (which not all do over the phone) vs. speaking with someone in a noisy takeaway, risk of confusion, repeating myself, and even after the order is read back it might be wrong....If they had their own website ordering system I'd use it. Surely got to cost less than c. 20% of revenue (approx. JE commission) to set one up and run it...

Gentlemen, I give you the Grillaz grill: Boneless peri chicken & Peruvian chicken, donner, chicken tikka, served with naan, green stuff, sauces & chips, all delivered for 10 of your English pounds. Oh and they chuck in a lamb chop too.
Good effort - though chips could do with being more of them .....
