Seeing as this is the 'Show us your whisky' thread, here's my whisky cabinet, newly rearranged into alphabetic order. nerd

I note the Aldi Glen Marnoch 29yo second from bottom on the left, what did you think of it? I'm just finishing my 4th bottle from last Christmas myself...

Not a Whisky/Whiskey drinker at all got a bottle of Haig Club for my Birthday last year and thought it was ok.

Anyway I was in Dublin a few weeks ago, after an enormous amount of Guinness/Larger the barmaid challenged us to drink the "strongest" Whiskey in the bar, was a glass of Teeling Whiskey, not sure of age/proof but it was very strong but surprisingly tasted very smooth (especially as we aren't whiskey drinkers).

As expected it went straight to the head, luckily it was closing time.

On a seperate note, and my reason for posting, has anybody in the UK managed to get hold of a bottle of "Proper Twelve" whiskey yet from Ireland? the only way I can see is to fly over to Dublin and bring it back? was hoping to buy it online.

Irish whisky is mostly triple distilled, which generally means it is smoother than Scottish whisky as a result.

Any reason for buy the Proper Twelve? As whisky goes you can get better quality elsewhere, so then (especially at the start) you'll be fighting on price with others just for the celeb connection. That's fine if you are ok with obviously, but for better quality whisky I'd recommend something else. Not seen any on sale yet, I guess some on auctions/facebook soon, but the first bottles always sell more than normal, as people want to have first bragging rights.

I'm a Conor McG fan followed him since his Cage Warriors days.

Certainly not bad for the money, that's for sure! I think though, considering it's age, it can't have been in a particularly active cask. It'll be interesting to see what Aldi/Lidl come up with this Christmas.

As long as you're buying it as a Mcgregor momento, then fine, but don't buy it for the contents of the bottle - from what I've read it's crap. Like an Irish Haig Club, only worse.

A slightly ruff head this morning and three bottles of the tour batch in the kitchen, no5, no7 and no47-all signed by one of the sons who was presenting the evening.

A good night, their 100% Islay was probably the favourite.

Are these particularly heavily peated, I'm assuming so?

They are peated, however none of them taste very peated to me. It's all quite young spirit but Kilchoman have really got the knack of doing a peated whiskey that has none of the medicinal hit that I hate.

There are very few peated whiskeys that I can drink (perversely, one is Octomor) but I could happily drink all of Kilchoman's range.

Have you tried much Speyside peated stuff? Tends to be a sweeter peat, without the medicinal/salty notes.

The only one that springs to mind is Glen Moray's, wasn't a fan of it personally even though I adore everything else they do.

I must implore everyone to try Kilchoran's 100% Islay however, delicious stuff.

Agree on the 100% Islay, but then I've been a big fan of Kilchoman ever since I had a bottle a few years back, bought on a whim when we were in Scotland and an instant fan, as you say lovely peat smoke without the medicinal hit, thinking I might try the Loch Gorm next.

It's my godfather's 70th birthday at the weekend.

Can anyone kindly suggest a decent bottle of whisky in the £75-100 price bracket as a gift?

TIA smile

Well that really entirely depends on his tastes, what does he normally drink? Does he have a favourite region?

Agreed.

However, this is largely a safe bet - https://www.glenfiddich.com/uk/shop/glenfiddich-th... - but is £120

Here are two that I'd strongly recommend:

https://www.thebalvenie.com/our-whisky-range/view/...

https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/benriach-cur...

The Benriach is an absolute steal. smile

Not sure how widely available the Balvenie is though as I got a bottle at the airport earlier in the year. Marvelous stuff!
