Quite sweet to start off with then lots of spice leading to a lovely warming glow to finish off.

Now that does sound good, can I enquire as to where from and how much?

What is it, not hear of it before. Some kind of cask finish or something?

A new NAS release, it came out a couple of months ago but seemed to be immediately unavailable. I assume the idea is for it to slot in beneath the now much more expensive Abunadh. It isn't cask strength (bottled at 48%).

Info from MoM:

"The first release in Aberlour's Casg Annamh series! This expression (named after the Gaelic for "rare cask") is matured in a trio of cask types, including European oak sherry casks and two sorts of American oak cask. Presented in similar livery to their very popular A'Bunadh expression, and with a sherry-dominated flavour profile too, we expect big things from Casg Annamh!
Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Milky coffee, flame raisins and plenty of honeyed malt.

Palate: Golden Grahams, nectarines, cinnamon and strawberry jam.

Finish: Cooking spices, sugary biscuits and red apples."

ETA This amused me, especially as I just paid £55:

Oh, and in case anyone fancies having their pants pulled firmly down, batch 62 of A'Bunadh has been released. £81.95 on MoM. Sheesh.

I never purchased this whisky as an investment, I always plan to drink them but by luck I purchased:

2*50cl bottles of Hibiki 12 from Tesco
1*70Cl hibiki 12 from Master of Malt years ago
1*70cl Hibiki 17 and a bottle of Hakushu 12 many years ago

I have these all unopened and the rumour is that these are no longer in production. I noticed auction prices on Scottish Whisky Auction with actual hammer purchase price would put this collection well over £1000......

With that in mind I've decided sell them because I think £1000 on whisky I will drink would be better spent. However, do you think I should hold off for awhile to see if I can be greedy and get more or have we reached "peak" Japan Whisky already?

Of course I could keep them and drink them but Ive had this plenty of times before and they are really not worth £350 each, id rather spend the money on a Glenfacrlas 40 for example

It's good to hear I didn't drink a £1,000 bottle of whisky without knowing it!

In the background of my picture there is a classic Lagavulin 16yr (lovely tipple), but also a Welsh whisky - now that was an acquired taste! It tasted very young - creamy like tequila and also a little harsh - but by the bottom of the bottle it had grown on me a little more.

I think it was this one: https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/penderyn/pen...

It was a gift, and looking at it now I am surprised at the price of it, and the fact it seems so well regarded!

Simple answer is no one knows. If it follows the Yoichi aged statement withdrawl then they jumped a bit, stayed at a level and then have been slowly creeping upwards with time. I'd be tempted to sell though if you will buy old whisky, as that is rising very quickly these days. Just seems to be very little stocks left, and it's become ok to charge more and more.

They are withdrawn for sure, although the wording of Hakushu 12 sounds like they have more in storage, which will occasionally be released over the next little while. So not completely gone yet.

Thanks for that. And ouch for the price paid in the auction!!!! As you said it seems to be a new model to move the Abunadh upmarket. I heard the 18yo has also gone silly prices.

I thought I'd try sherry for basically the first time. Free up some casks for maturing whisky in! Generally enjoyable, but there's a big grape-y taste during the middle which I'm not used to. Overall have to say sherry is still best for maturing whisky in, biggrin

I want to try a sherry (PX) cask-aged Islay malt - Christmas pudding flavours mixed with tar and TCP is a strangely alluring prospect - but I cannot come to a decision.

I had set my sights on Lagavuilin Distiller's Select, however, having researched further I have discovered that they use both caramel colouring and chill-filtering, which has put me off somewhat. My favourite Islay malt out of "the big three" is Laphroaig 10, however, after research they too use caramel colouring in their malts. This leaves Ardbeg out of the well known distilleries - specifically Uigeadail - however, I find Ardbeg's standard offering less palatable than the other two (less coastal sea spray and more smoke).

Uigeadail appeals on the basis that they say it does not chill-filter or use colourings, but more importantly it is bottled at cask strength. The reason I haven't bought a bottle (rightly or wrongly) is that it is a NAS, which leads me to believe it is newer than the standard offering, and the marketing spiel on their bottles is very off putting.

Can anybody recommend a sherry cask Islay malt that ticks all boxes? Ideally around the £100 mark.
