Show us your whisky! Vol 2
Discussion
Thanks to some of the advice on this thread I‘ve arranged the following for the Friday after next. Am quite excited. Should be quite a fun and full day, followed by the Highland Games and more whisky Saturday daytime, before heading to Aberdeen for a bit of mayhem. Land late Thursday evening and the boys have unanimously voted to head out on the lash (against my better advice!). Don‘t leave until 5pm Sunday, but have the feeling that Sunday might be a little subdued!

That's a pretty full on day! Might be worth having a few sample glasses just in case, as think that could be a little messy in just one day, Sounds good fun though!
Think favourite Glenfiddich would have to be the Spirit of Speyside bottling a few years back. But at least one of you lot wouldn't like it since it was a peated sherry cask - weirdo, That, or the sherry cask during the 15yo solera deconstructed tour!
For example bourbon barrel matured Scottish whiskies will often be described as vanilla, apples, maybe pears, perhaps citrus etc. Whisky that's in a strong sherry cask will often be described as Christmas pudding, raisins, red fruits, peppery perhaps and so on. Some stuff I have learned the "whisky world" tasting note, but to me personally it's something different. But for ease of use I have learnt the word to help others. Other stuff can be cultural - for example in europe vanilla is associated with sweetness, as it's more desert oriented. In Japan apparently it's savory instead - so you'd link it differently too. And taste buds are different. Some people can be very sensitive to whisky with a sulphur taste, whereas others (including me) don't have a problem with it - in fact some even like the taste a bit. (Sulphur in whisky isn't just rotten eggs - can be called meaty, burnt matches, rubber etc). It takes time, and since we're all different you won't have the same even if you did train loads!
You might want to see if you like sherried whiskies - possible brands are Glendronach, Aberlour, Glenfarclas (not all are sherried, but mostly are, and perhaps best). Macallan has some stunning ones, but the prices are silly for what you get now.

The thing I seem to struggle with at the moment is I can taste the difference in them but can’t yet put my finger on what it is that’s creating that taste! Il read a review and then start to get the flavours but don’t know if it’s just because iv been told that’s what should be there if that makes sense? So does anybody have any nice recommendations that have differences that I could try back to back and try help myself learn a bit more? And also so I can drink some more lovely whiskys!
He’s a picture of what I have so far,
Sorry for the long post!
Edit: on my iPhone don’t know why the pictures that way.
Sounds like a good approach in what you're doing. It's all about what you think, not anyone else says. So just try a lot of variety, and find what you like best. Tasting notes are interesting in themselves! A lot are very personal, and a lot is just about learning the right words to go with a taste. He’s a picture of what I have so far,

Can you at least remember which distillery it was at? NRS can’t work out how to quote you on mobile. We missed out on the Glenfiddich solera tour on Saturday morning, as one of our parties was undecided whether he was coming, so didn’t want to commit him to £50 if he would know later the same day if he could come. When I went back to book, all the slots had gone.

Crikey, that's a lot in one day! By the end of that, every whisky will taste the same. Take some water with you. 0915 Pick up from Aberdeen

I'm off up to Scotland next week in my camper van, (no doubt getting eaten by midges...), and we're staying in Aberlour for three days. Tours booked at Glenallachie on Wednesday and Benriach on Thursday. Mrs LeighW insists on going for lunch at Glenfiddich again, and I'm not going to argue, the Venison was awesome last time. I might take a wander in the shop of course...

I'm 99% sure he'll be talking about Balvenie, and their "fan club" type group. Pity it was booked out. Had it a few times before too. I've also seen that Chivas has reduced prices on their tours if lots of spaces left. That, or it was a coincidence and they changed prices between the times I looked.NRS can’t work out how to quote you on mobile. Thankfully the east coast is generally a bit better than the west for midgies! Fiddich is always good for lunch, and of course you can try some single cask exclusives from the bar too! I think the shop shop is standard stuff apart from the 15yo Solera cask strength, and of course the stupidly priced single cask fancy case bottles!I'm off up to Scotland next week in my camper van, (no doubt getting eaten by midges...), and we're staying in Aberlour for three days. I'm staying in Luss on Loch Lomond for a couple of nights on the way up (and on the way back, after Loch Ness), there are always clouds of the little swines there! The 15yo Solera Cask strength is what I had in mind!

Balvenie - Warehouse 24 member.
Can't see anything online about it now so looks like they've pulled it
I joined Amazon Prime "by mistake" as you do late last week...don't tell anyone in the shouty lounges though
Anyway since then most of this happened...The Ledaig 18 bought on the back of enjoying several bottles of the 10 y/o and the Makers 46 likewise after trying the standard bottling recently on my tentative journey into Bourbon.
The Lagavulin 16's were irrestible on Prime day at £39.50 a bottle and seem to have sold out quite quickly...they'll most likely sit in the whisky cupboard until winter to be honest.
Bringing up the rear for this weeks acquisitions are the interesting and very drinkable Glenfiddich Fire & Cane on offer at ASDA, and an honourary mention for the bottle of Jamesons gifted to me by a customer...haven't had any for years but it was a staple around 2000 when I thought all Scotch tasted like Bells/Teachers did at the time.
Apologies for the terrible rushed photo, but I have a pub to get to shortly, old workmates visiting from Australia so could be messy...

Just a head's up to those of you doing a trip to Speyside shortly. Chivas are about to start their annual single cask Distillery Collection releases. I heard Strathisla will get their bottles this week - so probably worth stopping by to get some. However could change as they seem to release in batches and so it can be a bit messy with timing. In addition the locals at Strathisla stripped the "auction worthy" bottles in around 1 day last year. Glenlivet and Aberlour lasted longer, but was I think around 1 month later than Strathisla for release date.
Thanks for the advice NRS (didn’t want to quote the whole post) don’t think I’ve tried any sherry ones yet so iv ordered a little tasting set from master of malt ‘sherry monsters’ to see how I find them, it includes;
Glenfarclas 105
Macallan 12
Lagavulin 2000
Kavalan sherry oak
Goldlys 14
Be a nice treat this weekend!
