Just seen this pop up on the amazon treasure truck: Highland Park Viking Tribe Single Malt

I like the Dragon Legend, is getting this one too overkill or does it offer something different?

Bought a bottle of this in Whitby at the weekend, it's a first release so only 3 years old but already a very pleasant drinking whisky with a lot of flavour.
Debating whether to buy another to keep.

I'm disappointed with Amazon's black Friday whisky offering but find it quite funny how much the Game of Thrones series has been discounted. There will be some quite upset "investors".

I've decided to sell a few of my nice bottles. (Hope it's not against the tiles to put this here).

If anyone is interested in any of the following and wants to avoid the auctions, PM me:

Thanks to FaceBook marketing and a £100 voucher I was given, I have a bottle of this on its way to me. Even with the discount and the voucher (not to mention swapping UK 20% VAT for Swiss 7.7%) it will be the most expensive bottle I’ve bought.

I’m both excited and nervous that my taste buds won’t be able to do it justice.

Gents, has anyone got any tips for hosting a whisky tasting night?

I've offered to host one for a few neighbours next weekend and keen to make it a good one.

Do you know what bottles are there? One of the main things is to get the right order for tasting. Generally low alcohol bourbon stuff first, followed by anything sherried, and then peated at the end. And going up cask strength too. If you have time on the night open the bottles early and have a sniff to check if the likely good order makes sense (assuming you don't know the order).

If it's more focus on the whisky it can be fun to do a blind tasting, where you either pour the glasses before so they don't know what is in them, or you can put aluminium foil around the bottle to hide it. If it's more mates just having a good night then no need for that.

Have water with pipettes, or just teaspoons for adding however much people need. Can also find out a few facts about the distilleries too, and mention a wee bit about them as you introduce the bottle (again, depends if just friends hanging out, or a whisky focus).

Anyone else doing a whisky advent calendar btw?

Some great ideas there NRS, thanks.

Its a bunch of neighbours, pre christmas drinks and trying a few different whiskies. We are all bringing a couple of bottles along for everyone to try. Probably kick off with a couple of beers, then onto the tasting.

Would it be wise starting with something like Monkey Shoulder?

I am a big peat lover, but also have a couple I might take along such as Dalmore Cigar, Balvennie Triple Cask Peated. Or might crack open some of the Game of Thrones ones since they aren't exactly rocketing in value as I'd hoped hehe

Also, hoping the misses has got me one of the Master of Malt Whisky advent calendars smile

I'd probably stick most of the GoT bottles before Monkey Shoulder in a tasting! They're very much approachable "light" whiskies for the most part - which could be good for a evening if not everyone is into whisky - or at least cask strength peat monsters! biggrin Clynelish, Lagavulin and Talisker are the better bottles IMO, but even comparing the GoT Talisker to stuff like the 10yo you'll notice it's less peaty. It's a good think to think about though - who is the "audience", not just whipping out the decent stuff that might not be appreciated. I shared some of a Glenfarclas Family Cask once with some non-whisky drinkers, and it was just too much alcohol for them to appreciate!

That's the current collection. Nothing overly fancy compared to others but it'll be a good excuse to get some of them opened.

At least two of the neighbours are massive whisky connoisseurs, so hopefully won't be too disappointed, or hopefully they'll take some fancy stuff biggrin

Just received this from my girlfriend. Couple of days late as we were away until late on Sunday and I was out last night.

First out of the box was this

Thought it was a bit too good for a random Tuesday night so decided to play catch up

Another 21 YO behind door 2. As I know nothing about Swedish whisky, I decided that would be my opener. Not bad, but tasted very alcoholic for a 46%.

Oh, nice calendar!

So far had the SWA Glenfarclas 25yo, Ben Nevis 1996 21yo small batch, and Highland Park Viking Pride? 18yo. First two I enjoyed, yesterday was not really my taste.

Some nice stuff there. Is the Glenfiddich 15yo from the distillery hidden away somewhere else then? Oh, and happy birthday!

Also got myself an advent calendar but have been away in Edinburgh this week for my birthday and forgot to take it so should be a nice catch up when I’m back! Don’t know what’s in it either so hopefully be some nice surprises that I haven’t had before.
Did the Whisky experience one night in Edinburgh and was a great way to spend an hour or so with 5 tastings throughout the tour.
The tour guide (a real decent guy called mike) had finished and came down into the whisky bar after as me and the mrs were having a few drams so I joined him for a Glendronach 18 and I really enjoyed it probably put it up there with my favourites!

So the whisky tasting night went really well. Very informal and a huge range of whisky brought round.

I took out the GoT Oban Bay reserve - pleasantly surprised. Very drinkable, little smoke.

Dalmore Cigar Malt - everyone loved it. Provably the highlight of the night.

Balvenie Triple Cask Peated also went down well.

A Tamnavulin which I can't remember which specific one was another easy drinker.

Really impressed with the whisky advent calendar. Mine is a different one to the one above, maybe a slightly cheaper one as no 21 year olds yet..
