Fine dining recommendations in Manchester
Discussion
In terms of fine dining, there's not much. There's The French (formerly Simon Rogan's), and the new Rabbit in the Moon (Michael O'Hare - Man Behind the Curtain fame). Both are getting rave reviews at the moment, although I've not yet had chance to try either.
Beyond fine dining, there are quite a few other excellent options, many of them on the tapas theme: El Gato Negro, Iberica, La Bandera. Then there's Yuzu, Siam Smiles and Umezushi for eastern cuisine, the latter being rated as one of the best sushi/sashimi places outside London.

Why is everyone talking about tapas? It's not fine dining.
Manchester House, The French at the Midland. If you want a good steak, Hawksmoor.
there's no point in mentioning manchester house or the french, you try getting a table for this weekend with such short notice..Manchester House, The French at the Midland. If you want a good steak, Hawksmoor.
Hawksmoor is alright and you should be able to get in
Tattu would be my choice over 68 deg, it's really lovely but easy to get carried away and spend lots

For a city of it's size, Manchester has an extremely poor selection of fine dining restaurants. The best we could find was Michael Caine's place - Abode, which was average at best.
And not the best Manchester has to offer.Manchester has never had much of a history of fine dining though. However, it's only really recently that its developed a resident population large enough and of enough means to support a decent foo scene.

Just an update... Manchester House, Artisan and Grill on the Alley are all closed / to close. Crazy times!
First two are/were Living Ventures. Not sure if it's down to the death of Tim Bacon but Living Ventures seems to have suffered massively in the last couple of years.Personally I put it down to them all feeling a little too much like the same product. There are a enough decent indies now that people can afford to be more choosy.

Not surprised to hear that Manchester House has closed. It was average at best, pretentious garbage at worst. I am no fan of Aidan Byrne but, reluctantly, have to admit that 20 Stories is quite good though.
Manchester House was great in its day, but the last couple of years the food has been slowly going down hill I admit. 20 Stories is not good IMHO. James Martin wipes the floor with them, sure not in a fancy location but if its the food we are talking about he is about half the cost and twice the quality.
I reckon 20 Stories will last max 3 or 4 years in its current set up. I suspect the menu will become burgers and chips pretty quickly.

Best of the bunch in Manchester at the moment is Tast imo.
Aiden Byrne is leaving 20 Stories.Best of the bunch in Manchester at the moment is Tast imo.
Rabbit (in the Moon) also closing.
We enjoy going to Bem Brasil on Lever Street in the Northern quarter, not fine dining as such but something different.
