I remember hating Marmite as a child, couldn't really remember what it tasted of , just that I didn't like it. Then recently I was visiting my old Mum who was ill and the first thing she asked for after a few days of not eating was a slice of toast with Marmite.

Yeugh! I thought, but made it for her all the same and unconsciously licked my fingers after. I really enjoyed it and have since bought myself a jar. It's my new late night snack, thinly spread on malted bread or toast with butter.

Just wondering though, it has a strong savoury flavour, must be good for adding something to bland dishes, maybe a souffle or a sauce. Anyone got any suggestions?

Lots of things you can add it to.

Not to mention the various Marmite products now available, nuts, rice cakes, flatbreads etc.

Cheese and marmite jacket potato.
Cheese and marmite omelette.
Marmite bagels.
Bacon roll with marmite for that extra salty hit.

My eldest son lives the stuff. When he was two I caught him with his fist in the jar then licking it off his open hands. Proud moment.

Malted bread - thick sliced, toasted, with a decent smear of butter, then a good plasterer's coat of crunchy peanut butter and a painter's coating of Marmite is sublime. cloud9

But then I like pineapple on my pepperoni pizzas so what do I know? hehe

I'm more into 1/2 teaspoon of Bovril in my gravy - it adds a sweetness which I find really compliments a roast dinner (a bit like apple sauce with pork). I've never tried Marmite in gravy - must give it a go.

ETA:
I forgot to mention. Years a ago I was driving machinery on a farm. In the height of summer having been on a tractor since 7am someone might arrive at about 2pm with some lunch. One day the owner's brother showed up with a small can of ice cold Heineken and a white bread cheese sandwich with Marmite in it.

vomit

I hate lager, can barely stand white bread, and f**king Marmite???? - Twenty five years later I remember it was one of the best lunches I've ever eaten.

Marmite is definitely something for matured taste buds!

Try and get your hands on Vegemite, tastes really good too cut with some butter lick (big Tescos seem to stock them)

My eldest (6 next week) like his toast what he describes as "half and half". Depending as to how hungry he is either two slices of toast or one slice halved, each bit buttered then one bit chocolate spread the other marmite which he then proceeds to sandwich together and eat!

Not really sure about this myself but I haven't tried it so I maybe missing something?

Personally love marmite especially on toast. Had a cream cheese and marmite sandwich for lunch biggrin

Hated Marmite as a kid, love it now! Favourite snack is cheese, mushroom and Marmite toasties. Marmite roasties are spot on! Very limited in our household as swmbo hates the stuff LOL.

Marmite XO is good if you can find it (Not sure if still in the shops, think it was Ltd).

As for Vegimite......honking stuff! My mate left his when he popped over from Oz, its far too salty for me.

Vegemite is really meant to eaten with a fair bit of butter from an Aussie ex.

My dad is a Marmite fan so I got him a Marmite easter egg. It claimed on the packaging to be Marmite flavoured chocolate.

And it is! My wife bought me a box of Marmite chocolates - but not all are 'infused' with it so it's a bit of a lucky dip. Fortunately both varieties are patatable (to me at least)

XO was limited frown
I contacted them and they said it was, but "may come back in the future"
If it does then I'm buying the lot!

It was so much smoother than regular Marmite

Marmite and marmalade on toast. Sweet and savoury. Discovered by licking my knife after making toast with both separately.

Always add a bit of Marmite to gravy. Worcester sauce too on occasion.

Mmmm. Just had this as my mid morning snack, lovely.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I'm going to try a Chilli sans carne with a touch of Marmite tonight.
