Tried HZG twice and both times they fell well short of expectations unfortunately. I was hoping for a good place for German sausages but I don't rate it.

Probably because chicken don't lend itself well to mincing?

amongst the meats i normally eat: beef, pork, lamb and chicken, chicken is the odd one out that you can't easily buy minced. For the reason above.
It does, and is common in Thai cooking - but more for stirfries, etc rather than burgers.

Waitrose have started selling chicken burgers and they aren't bad, though I don't advise having them pink. wink

Mincing is an excellent way to prepare a beast imho, and I reckon a good burger definitely rivals a good steak for good eating.
100% agreed, and it's no secret that this is why burgers are popular. Take 3 tasty cuts (usually, sometimes more or fewer), blend them together with the right ratio of meat:fat, and get the best of all worlds without the need to cook for prolonged periods to render the fat.

Are people really getting upset about paying a tenner for a burger and fries lol... stick to the McDonald's saver menu then laugh

My go to is Five Guys if I want a decent burger, consistently good and the fries in the peanut oil are unreal. Failing that I think Patty&Bun is next favourite!
Didn't rate GBK, Honest, Byron at all, very average. In-and-Out burger is alright too but again nothing that special.

But the best burger I have ever had was in San Francisco, a little place called Sam's...absolutely brilliant! Anthony Bourdain agreed too.

Or if it's really good meat mix some egg in and don't bother cooking it smile

I know there's a whole other thread on it, but I'd rate most places higher than 5 guys. A cheap thin burger in a soggy bun, for similar money to a decent burger from a good pub. I agree the fries aren't bad but nowhere near as good some decent chunky chips. Are they franchises with widely varying quality or do people just have very different tastes?

My "go to burger" would be the Alfred Freehouse in Farnham biggrin

Yeah I agree, I guess I am talking more of the chain types...I have had plenty of really nice burgers from pubs too. But for a good greasy burger, personally can't beat a Five Guys, with all the toppings too...I'm hungry now!

Has Wahlburger been mentioned? There’s one due to open in Covent Garden. The present ones (26) are all in the States I believe.

Yes, it’s Mark Wahlburg and brothers and I’ve not always been impressed with celebs/actors involvement in food either!

Hache Camden... the Mexican. Not bad, but not as good as I recall (fairly regular here).

Christ that looks grim.

Is it the camera or was it as dry as it looks?

Sadly, not all the camera.

Been to Hache a lot over the years and it’s always been excellent (been with other PHers who can testify it’s been good) but last night was poor.

I think Honest are the best out there.

On that subject... We've recently moved offices and the new place is in a town centre with a shopping mall food court within 2 minutes walk, it has become a bit of a Friday treat to go down to Maccas.

You can get a chicken burger and a double cheeseburger for £1.49 each, so the same price as a supermarket 'meal deal' for the pair. No need for any chips and wash it down with some pop from a multi-pack under your desk.

Or you can just use the £1.99 Big Mac and Fries deal from your previous till receipt having spent a couple of minutes online filling out a survey (although they don't seem to check the codes so you could probably write any old nonsense on the receipt).

Not gourmet by any standards, but certainly excellent VFM.

You may get a sarky “living the dream” comment (warm coke from under the desk is pushing the limit for me smile) but that is extraordinary value when you think about it. I had the misfortune/stupidity to dive into Boho last night because I was pissed off with 1 + 1 ‘hangry’ offspring and everywhere was packed. 1 x burger (doesn’t even have cheese, just a bit of limp lettuce and a slice of tomato), 1 x chicken burger (ditto garnish) and 1 x vegetarian lasagne (came out after the burgers had been finished). 3 x fries (not special). 2 x Mojito (rubbish but ONLY £9 each). £85 in total! yikes Knocked off the service charge and another 20% but was still over 50 quid! It’s a 1970’s tourist trap - Aberdeen Angus Steakhouse for burgers (and other ste).

Oh, a small bottle of Guinness was £8 weeping

Can I make a booking at your desk please? laugh

Hache were sold to VC last year, and the original management team all left. The likelihood is that you're seeing the impact of this, where costs are being cut to help them 'scale out' the brand.
A real shame, as I rated them as one of the best and most consistent burgers in London. The Louisiana (particularly on their bun-free option) was sublime.

Ah, interesting.

I noticed the menu had changed.

Serving chips in a metal basket is an instant turn off for me.

No problem!

It's quite unassuming, doesn't look fancy at all and if you didn't know you would probably just walk past it. But the burger is really good, Anthony Bourdain said top 3 in the world I believe.
