Red's double Pit Burger, £16.95 with fries and worth every penny if you like meat.

"Beef patty, Unholy BBQ sauce, smoked brisket, pulled pork, smoked bacon, burger cheese, Dirty sauce, tomato, onion, pickles, lettuce. Served with a giant onion ring"

That looks ridiculous and would probably be a cold mess by the time you have finished eating it.

Red's is pretty good though, at least the Leeds one. I prefer their ribs and the chicken.

Yeah, it's too much. It annoys me when I get served a burger that's too big to pick up and manhandle. There should be an EU-mandated maximum height for a burger.

Would that make that giant burger from Reds a Brexit burger?

I can confirm that it remained warm throughout the eating process and with the onion ring from the top removed it was easy to handle (I have normal hands, might be harder if you're a child or Donald Trump) if a little juicy, not one for a white shirt. What stood out was that each component was of a great standard, this wasn't a crap burger hidden beneath overpowering toppings, it's a vertical showcase for their BBQ skills.

The next planned burger outing involves trying this Christmas special one at Almost Famous... calm yourself burger purists.

The other option is this:

It's Almost Famous, they have two places in Manchester, one in Liverpool and one in Leeds - they seem to be able to combine flavours and things that really shouldn't work and create some really tasty items. They are also quite compact despite how they look in the photos so quite manageable, they also have kitchen rolls on each table.

Now that, I really appreciate when in such an establishment. Just like in Bodeans.

It's pretty common now, to be honest.

Tried them today, I thought dreadful! The ones they gave me were all limp and damp. Not how decent fast food fries should be.

Best I could do with them was dump them in gravy and then eat them.

I got them unexpectedly the other day. I didn't realise it was coming across the chain.

I thought they were much better than the skinny pale white fries that used to be served up.

I know it’s already been said but I’m not sure 5 Guys represents value. Second ever experience yesterday - 2 cheeseburgers, 1 regular fries and 2 soft drinks - £28.75! It was ok (bun was cold, meat acceptable and fries quite good). I just hope that the massive margin on £3.50 post-mix drinks subsidises the cost of the burger.

Maybe it’s the contrast of fast food concept at table service prices that jars.

One thing to remember/note with operations like 5G's. The costs to run a franchise in the UK are significant. In my opinion the only ones to make money are the franchisor i.e 5G USA. You have to buy everything from them. 1M quid for the kitchen, the food, the drink. It's all marketed up. Then you have to pay royalties in the order of 8% of revenue!. Located in better locations where rent/rates are very high. That right there is your net margin. Gone. I would almost guarantee 5G's UK makes losses and will continue to do so until they hit 20-30 stores and perhaps they can get better pricing from 5G inc. But look at the investment/return. It's poor (return) and the risks are high.

i quite like damp soggy sweated fries though, so maybes thats why i liked them!

mcdonalds fries though seem to have gone massively down hill. i dont like the crispy thick fries i got from BK recently.

crisp fries should be very thin...anything thicker should have some give and flop...imo!

they must be close to 20-30 stores already, they seem to be popping up everywhere, at least in the South/East

i cant see how that cost so much, burgers are 6 quid? fries i assume 3ish? even with my D at A Level maths that's about 10 quiddish isn't it?

you do get loads of fries and unlimited drinks (although now only fruit flavors of coke are zero that's not worth it anymore)

i had it again on saturday, this time from colchester, back to my original opinion, the one from harlow was an exception, again tasteless burger, fries too well seasoned, nice hot dog though.

ive never had it not hot enough, but then only had takeout so suppose them wrapping in foil allows the burger heat to warm bun up.

A standard bacon cheeseburger at five guys is actually £8.75 or it is up north and a regular fries is about £4.50.

I like them but the cost is quite steep, i could easily eat two of the burgers!
