Not cheap but very good.
Fine wine advice too.

Another vote for Hunan. Went there on a posh work do and had the private dining area up stairs.

You will struggle to find really good authentic Chinese in London. It is a cuisine that has been westernised more than most. I will venture out in London for DIm Sum, and then only to places where you will be outnumbered massively by Chinese diners such as New Loon Fung in Gerard street. I wouldn't really recommend anywhere for a proper evening meal though

The Duck and Rice on Berwick Street, Soho.

Really good food, atmosphere and drinks. Just make sure you sit in the restaurant upstairs, because the downstairs bar has a smaller menu. Order dim sum, crispy duck and try the beer cocktails. You're sure to have a great time.

This place: http://awong.co.uk/ been a few times and a total game changer for Chinese food in London. The place doesn't look snazzy but the food is fantastic.

Wife and I usually go to the Feng Shang Princess on Grand Union Canal in Regents Park. Not knock your socks off good, but decent and nice environment, and make stuff thats not on the menu if we ask. Plus you can park right outside in the evening.

Probably not genuine.
As I understand it, they've been there since the early 90s.
Not great value for money, but I think the food is very good.
We've been going for over 15 years and have taken many friends and family - everyone has loved it.

China Tang, on the other hand I thought was poor. It was a New Years eve set menu dinner maybe 6 or 7 years ago though. Will have to try again.

The other option is Parc Chinois OP. I liked the food but service was average and I thought it was very expensive.

Maxi Mini near Marble Arch. Owned by the actual Jimmy Choo with sketches of shoes on the walls to prove it!

Medium budget.

Ha Ha! I used to love the Wong Kei however iIve heard it has changed hands and have been dissappointed to hear service has improved.

Used to enjoy being sworn at and threatened by the waiters.

I would ignore them - Hunan is fantastic.

Been loads of times, and never had a duff meal. Don't order from the menu, just let them bring you food. The owner (or I think it's his son these days) asks a few questions - Hot and Spicy, Seafood, Vegetarian etc, and then they bring out a succession of small dishes a few minutes apart. Many of these are very small - e.g. one 2" diameter stuffed mushroom per person - but they are all very tasty and there's only a couple of minutes until the next course.

My absolute favourite is the "chips" - green beans, deep fried - I always ask for a double portion of those. I avoid the "Sea Chicken" - it's Frogs Legs, and I really don't like them.

This. I have to settle for just having 'upstairs' barked at me and that's about as rude as they get now... Disappointing.

How many of you recommending a joint have spent any time in China and not just Beijing or Shanghai central districts?

What's your point? Doesn't stop Hunan or A Wong being very good restaurants.

And for those mentioning Wong Kei it hasn't been like it was for 5 years. I first went 20 years ago where a highlight in a group of 15 of us was when the 3rd person asked for a fork the waiter shouted "YOU WANT FORK, YOU GET FORK!"
Back then it was very cheap, cash only, huge portions and rude service - all pointing to a money laundering front. Now portions are much smaller, cost more they take cards and will even bring you a glass with your beer! No 4 packs still in ringpulls dumped on the table anymore!
Many better places in china town now.

It still is cash only and they still are rude, but nowhere near the level they were.
