don't do an open bar. We did two drinks 'tokens' per person as a bit of a laugh. 2 is a nice freebie, and if people are not drinking they can give their tokens to others. Some people did pretty well out of it. People don't mind paying after they're on their way a bit. Open bar will just mean vomming or ordering fking ridiculous st and it will cost you a fking fortune. You will realise that you shouldn't have invited some of the people and probably won't speak to them again.

Isn't this a troubling insight into the English drinking culture? Apparently, you can't buy your friends a drink because they can't control themselves. That is a definition of alcoholism.

no it isn't really, but it more depends how wide a net you are casting with your friends and family. Even with a small wedding there will always be people there you won't know that well (even if your partner does) and often a range of types of people... families tend to a bit like that. Presented with a free bar i think i might be tempted to drink more than i would do if i was paying; as I am sure many people would. It is weird to suggest otherwise. Given that, I'd be wary of it ruining the night for some people, and consequently at risk of also ruining it for the couple getting married. That in addition to the fact that it would likely cost a lot more on the bill at the end. Many people came up to us and said what a good idea the tokens were, and this was probably just the right sort of amount. I think when we cashed up the bar at the end it was around £1200, which is not too bad.

A small update. I got married on Thursday, and as mentioned the decision was Cava on arrival, two bottles per table of 6, then a pay for bar. As far as I'm concerned it worked fine. There was actually plenty of wine left after the meal, so much so that two of the last of us standing at 2.15am took up to their room a bottle of wine left remaining. I didn't buy a drink all night, which was nice, at one point I actually had 3 gifted pints of Becks lined up on my table! Everyone had an amazing time. Probably 50% were sober or tipsy, 40% well juiced, and 10% completely out of their tree. Good times, and a lot of great great memories.

We did welcome drinks, half a bottle of wine per adult and then toast drinks. We then paid for the bar all evening, with some small stipulations - no doubles, no red bull. Came to about £3k which wasn't too bad.
