Lift buttons and jews
Discussion
So last night (Friday night) I walked home to my apartment. In front of me was a group of smartly dressed Jewish men obviously just back from their Friday night sinagogue service. We walk towards the lifts, me following. When they get to the lifts instead of pressing the button, they just stand there. Then it dawns on me. They are not allowed to press lift buttons! I am normally a reasonably polite chap but I decide that, fk it, I am not pandering to religious nonsense when it is not even my religion by pressing it for them. I wonder how long we are all going to stand there, when (dammit) the lift door opens and someone comes out. They pile in, me following. Again, they do not press the button to their floor. I press my button and the doors start to close. One of them puts his foot in the door to stop it closing, and calls the concierge over. The concierge presses their button for them and up we go.
Two questions - what would they have done if I had been a bit quicker and the lift doors closed before they got the concierge to press their button, and - how did they take the lift down on the way out?

By sticking a foot in a door, they would have been interfering with the operation of machinery - so "working" - just the same as by pressing the floor button. In reality, they'd simply have taken the stairs.

i had the same in LA
girl upstairs was sitting in complete darkness because her father had forgot to turn the lights on for her when she got home. she knocked and asked if i would turn her light on and open the fridge so she could get something.
all very odd
Almost like a modern day take on the first act of 'La Boheme'. Were her hands cold? girl upstairs was sitting in complete darkness because her father had forgot to turn the lights on for her when she got home. she knocked and asked if i would turn her light on and open the fridge so she could get something.

How people interpret it is up to them. Have a look at the London Eruvs - rings of wire strung above the pavement which encircle an area where it's perfectly OK to do otherwise forbidden work like pushing wheelchairs or prams or carrying house keys...
