just need to do what companies like ebay and amazon do and ask you if you want to round up to the nearest pound and the money goes to charities

Indeed but there isn’t much of a push to do that and research has shown that it is not as effective as giving someone their pennies and having a box nearby.

I have been travelling around London today and whenever I passed a McDonalds I went in to see if I could add bacon and other things to the standard menu items using the touch screens as some previous posters have claimed. I have been in 6 branches and in ALL of them you could only take things away or re-add something you removed, the same as I said previously.

Seems odd to me that if substitutions and add ins are available at some sites why they would not be available at all? I know the places are franchises but surely they use standard software.

Wasn’t try to win anything hehe and certainly not calling anyone a liar. Central London has them all very close together so it’s nowhere near as much effort as it sounds not did I go out if my way. It would be amazing if you could basically build your own burgers. It would be like back in uni days when friends worked for these kind of places. I used to often get a double whopper made into a massive mushroom double Swiss. Yum

Trial in some areas of the country, or gradual rollout in parallel with extra training, who knows. I don't see that you can assume all McDonalds branches are automatically using the same software and features on their systems.

What is interesting about that is that at 1m 08s it shows Additional ingredients which is what I was trying to find today! Looks to be in the US though

you could before you just asked instead of using a touchscreen.

I use the app and then scan a thing on the wall - I think it is QR code or similar (?).

I have not had any problems with it but have stopped using it to order drinks as it isn't possible to customise the order from the app and remove ice, which you can on the touch screen inside. Don't trust the ice machines when it comes to bacteria, they are probably worse than the touchscreens.

In and out in a few minutes usually, but I've never used it to order more than one or two items...seems a good system to me given it is early days etc.
You spend too much time on the BBC/Watchdog?

When my (vegetarian) daughter orders she has no trouble in getting rid of the burger patty and pickle from her cheeseburger and adding extra cheese to make a very expensive cheese sandwich. I've seen her do this at a few different branches here in Lincolnshire and even in one on holiday in Singapore.

If she gets to the machine first she also likes to show off her language skills by switching the language to German. Fine for her but leaves me scrabbling round to find ein gross mac and frites or whatever.

My 12 year old daughter visited the local store last week with her friends.

They’d heard about the “customise” option, so took it to a different level for a laugh...

They ordered a cheeseburger less everything except the cheese.

The table service lady presented a single slice of cheese on a polystyrene plate.... :-)

Loads of people are doing this for social media content and fun. Maccas must love it as it still costs them the same regardless of how much stuff they add/remove.

So many idiots paying 99p for a slice of cheese.

Yeah there is one video out there where they buy one item for a Big Mac from about 7 different McDonald’s to go home and build one cold burger

I'm all for technology but when employers of low paid unskilled workers like McDonald's are working hard to reduce the number of people they employ, that's a bigger worry than waiting 14 minutes for a burger IMO. Same thing as automated checkouts. Some kind of universal basic income will have to happen in the next 20 years I reckon.

They are not the most hygienic of things though. Use your hands to make your order on a screen where someone has just finished using it after wiping their ass in the loo and not washing their hands.

The one that gets me is the automated check in touch screens at Doctor's surgeries - same problem as above except with the added excitement of everyone being ill!

The rise of contactless has been identified by charities in general as a real issue for exactly the reason you state and income has fallen. A few years ago they campaigned against a proposal to get rid of small coins under 10p due to a fear of losing money but contactless and self service have hurt more than anything.
Offset perhaps by sites like Justgiving? I seem to get bombarded with donation requests from friends and hardly known aquaintances when they decide to get off their fat arses and do a 2k run, get a free trip to disneyworld, get a tattoo etc.

Never really had a problem with the new ordering process in McDonalds. For balance, I was in 5 guys the other day, it took over 20 mins to get my lunch after ordering.

I noticed that when my daughter removes the patty and pickle, she gets no reduction on the price, but they do add on 30p or something for the extra cheese. I wonder if you could remove everything and they'd just give you a paper wrapper?

This thread has made interesting reading as a McDonald’s employee of over 10 years. It seems that the general consensus is pretty positive.

To answer the above, we aren’t reducing the number of employees per resutaurant and on average each drive thru has between 65 and 100 employees. The new ordering system and table service option just means staff undertake different duties and in theory should spend more time at front of house.
