My understanding of them if that they are like sandwich shops where you walk in and there is a heated rack with Big Macs etc on them and you pick them up like you would in a sandwich shop, take them to the counter and pay
ah so we can self-select our cooled down burgers and be forced to have them with pickle in, gotcha
Yep so everything is to the original spec and they will only sell a very limited selection so I’m expecting the places to look like a tiny unit with a warmer rack in front of a small kitchen and then a till so it will be like buying a mars bar in a newsagent

The article on the I website says they have order touchscreens? I might pop down there next week and see what all the fuss is about.

Good plan. I don’t know why they would need separate stores. It if was me I would have a warmer shelf next to the tills in the current stores and keep the items on that so if I’m in a rush I grab one and go and if I’m not I order in the screen and have made to order.

Basically what they used to do then?! Join small queue, grab whatever was ready on the slider and get out asap.

Fast food doesn't need to be cooked fresh, the whole thing has gone full circle.

I remember some mcdonalds in London years ago, heavingly busy, placed order, staff ran to collect order as everything was already cooked and ready and had food in seconds

Guess that only works in a busy place, so you can estimate what to cook and be pretty sure to sell what's cooked- but that's what you call fast food

The one at LiverpoolSt station ran like clockwork, I was always impressed by the efficiency there.

Nope there's still touch screens that you're forced to order from, no grab and go heated shelf.

I don't know why that "I" article claims it is the first new concept for McDonalds since the 1980s - surely the touchscreens and the table delivery were new concepts already?

The only innovation over the existing takeaway-only branches such as St Martins Lane that I already mentioned, seems to be that there is hardly anything on the menu, and they've removed the option to place your order with a human.

I don't know who does the innovating at McDonalds, but I think they need someone new!

More innovative would have been to go the Febo route (common in the Netherlands) where the shop is a wall of warmed compartments and you put your euro coins in (or do a contactless touch), open the door, take out your burger / potato product, and walk away with truly instant food.

That’s a complete waste of time then. How much time will you actually save and you have the negative of the tiny menu.

I was amazed to hear this has been around 125 years

From that perspective there does not seem to have been much progress

The big one in Cardiff had a queuing system like a drive through. That was really quick but I haven't seen it anywhere else.

There is something psychologically different about waiting to place an order and being served quickly, and quickly placing an order and waiting - particularly if the food turns out to be a bit crap.

I don't even know what happens at the grill or hot shelf as I just use the screens and wait for them to call my number but I was able to order and eat a Spicy Veggie while waiting for a train which was unthinkable a year or 2 ago. That's progress, whatever they've done.

I assume it would only work at really busy sites, but is it likely to be rolled out in other locations?
Yes and possibly if the trial goes well.

Well if you've got the MyMcDonalds app on your iphone, don't update to the version they've pushed out today. Just crashes immediately and repeatedly when you try to open it, loads of people commenting the same on the reviews page and on twitter. Muppets.

Does make me wonder how a company that big can do it so badly?

Traditional Friday morning stop at Mcds today. "New" bacon roll... ok will give that a go.... £4.39!!! How is it 40p more than a breakfast wrap? The wrap has cheese, egg and a sausage over and above and its cheaper?!?

Was alright though, better than the old ones but not better than the breakfast wrap.

In good news, the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese is coming back from 7 August for seven weeks.

In ecofarce news, turns out that their stty paper straws can't be recycled, whereas the plastic ones could be. NOW can we have proper straws back please? I note that BK and KFC stuck with plastic and didn't jump on the tokenism bandwagon.
