Gutted that Little Chief are pretty much shut down now. People always say what a rip off it was. I’m not sure as Starbucks who are replacing them quite happily charge £4.29 for a cheese toastie.

I wouldn't say it was a rip off as such, their Olympic breakfast was certainly reasonable value considering they were situated on prime land. The downfall was lack of investment which turned people away and changing habits which they didn't seem to keep up with. A lot of their restaurants were originally on busy routes which over time were taken over by motorways, while people still use the old routes, it isn't enough to keep ailing restaurants going.

The one on the Southbound A34 at Weston on the Green was always empty for the past 9 years i've been driving past it, you might see 2 or 3 people in there at most, If they did ever get busy it would be a long wait as there was only ever a chef and one other person on duty, they couldn't afford anyone else.

Well there does appear to be 5 still open.

Looking at the Menu you can see why they'll closing..... £8 for a breakfast. £4 for a bacon roll.

Main menu is straight from the 80's. Boring and expensive. Have you seen the price of their burgers?laugh

What is more surprising is how the fk are 5 still open? Or even how on earth are Wimpy still in business?

I remember as a youngster actually liking the taste of a Wimpy burger. Not something that I could say about McDonald's.

TBH I thought that LC weren't too bad... no, it's not haute cuisine but it doesn't seem any worse than McD's/BK etc.

They did seem to get quite expensive quite quickly in the last few years,, but this may have been in their attempts to maintain an operating profits when the people through the doors started to decline, I often used them when driving around the UK for a living, and they did not seem so expensive then (quite good value for money in fact) As others have stated their Olympic breakfast always seemed like decent meal in times past.
Certainly when compared to the modern chains. The worst for food and VFM seems to be the crap food outlets at motorway service stations
Has anyone noticed how the burger/sub,etc that one actually gets given, looks nothing like the burger/sub we see in the adverts for the various burgers, and /subs? I wonder if they load them up big time for burger / subs shown in the adverts,

I can't say I'm surprised they are shutting down.... a different era perhaps.

For me, Little Chef meals seem to be part of some of my best childhood memories - On the way to Bala with the whole family, stopping at the LC in the morning for an Olympic Breakfast or on the way home for pancakes with Cherry sauce and Ice cream, followed by a lollipop sweet on a stick. How can you beat that.....

It was always ok for a breakfast, although not cheap.

Happened to be passing the Heston’d ones a couple of times, and the food was actually pretty good.

McD's have a video on Youtube showing how they prep their burgers for photos, it's all trickery via placing of the ingredients

I would happily stop for a little chef although it was always somewhere you would stop for breakfast rather than an evening meal. Its a shame they will be replaced with starbucks.

As for Wimpy, that's gotten expensive too but i still love them, it cost £35 for 4 of us last weekend.

Reading this thread made me look to see where they were still open. Turns out I am driving right past the Ilmimster one tomorrow morning. Looks like an Olympic breakfast is in order.

Dont pay up front as they might close the branch before they bring your breakfast out.

I couldn't face it. As I approached the little chef I thought about stopping but the thought of an Olympic breakfast was just not appetising enough to make me break the journey at that time of the morning.

Little Chef vs. Greasy transport cafe? Greasy transport cafe every time. £8 for a breakfast that doesn't include tea or coffee - fkoffski.

There are other reasons why LC perform so badly. Wait for food. The norm at LC was to cook one order at a time. Sure some places had chefs that would cook multiple orders at once, but that was not usual. So if you were the 10th table waiting, then the chef would normally cook orders in line which would take ages. The good chefs would see that order 1, 5 and 10 all want Olympic Breakfast and cook them at the same time.

They didn't need Heston to come up with a fancy menu, they needed to sort out order to food on the table times. Even 1 car in the car park would mean they were going to be slow let alone a holiday season restaurant full of grockles.

However, in recent years this seems to have been done but was it too late? Last few I have used were quick even with a few families in.

My Dad used to take me as a treat, every so often, when I was a kid (30-odd years ago).

I remember a certain burger being the best thing I ever ate... Not that I can remember what it was called!

Haven't been in well over a decade but it'll be a sad day for me when they're all gone frown

However, I do remember my trucker mates referring to it as the Little Thief.
