It's never a pain to have too much.

It is when the OP suggested they could "polish off" any extras at a rate of one to two bottles a month

It's only <£10 a bottle wine.

If it's decent and stored properly, having too much is never a problem.

Ignore the temptation to think like "we have X people drinking red, and Y people drinking white" - you'll be wrong. Just go on total headcount.
