Feel human again this morning thank god and I’ve lost half a stone too so it’s not all bad!

Microwaving then stirfrying prawns? They'll be like bullets! Another vote for it being something else.
They weren’t like bullets in the slightest, I used the defrost function. They tasted fine and felt fine.

I stopped eating prawns after reading about the prawn farming practices in Vietnam where most of the frozen ones come from

Pretty much this.

I don't want to eat anything which swims around in a concentrated chemical soup of its own st.

I don't eat farmed fish either.

I'm pretty sure microwave defrosting raw meat / seafood is a hygiene no no? I've certainly read that online.

FYI Frozen prawns defrost in a bowl of tap water in about 10 mins. You don't want to warm them to lukewarm if you can avoid it.

I’ve defrosted meat and fish in the microwave for years and never had an issue to date? These were quite large king prawns so wouldn’t have defrosted in water very quickly.

Why would you microwave frozen prawns?

Everyone I know runs them under cold water in a sieve for a bit.
This.

+3.

Frozen prawns in a bowl left under a running cold tap. They defrost in a few minutes.

I would never ever defrost the in the microwave.

Ah, Seafood roulette, a game the whole family can play.
A game which I permanently abstain from! Prawns and the like are known as "sh|t-eating crustaceans" around these parts.

Perhaps this is 'wrong' but i just put them into the stir fry, curry, or whatever FROZEN. They soon defrost and i've never had a problem.

Nothing wrong with that at all as long as they are cooked through.

The only problem with that is to get them cooked all the way through to safe temperature, you may have to overcook the OTHER ingredients in your stir fry.

I've not heard of microwaving frozen prawns before but that seems unlikey to be the cause. I always throw them straight in from the freezer and they defrost/heat in whatever I'm cooking

I gave myself a horrible time reheating rice twice - never making that mistake again. Horrendous.

That's what I always do. The trick, as I understand it, is to kill any bacteria that may be present and to defrost in such a way that limits the amount of bacteria that can grow during the defrosting.

Without analysing the remains of the meal and the contents of your families digestive tract it's very difficult to work out what the cause may have been. My wife got sick years ago when she ordered something from a takeaway that had prawns in it, she was violently ill for around 12 hours (around 4 hours after consumption) and then was ok again. We sort of assumed it was the prawns as the takeaway probably don't sell many and leave them hanging around for days and days in the fridge in a foul syrup of their own corruption biggrin..... vomit

Last night I cooked a king prawn stir fry, something I’ve done probably hundreds of times, the prawns came out of the freezer, they were put in there the day before the use by date and taken out the day after the use by date. I defrosted them slowly in the microwave on 50% power then added them to the hot pan and cooked them what I thought was pretty thoroughly.... 5-6 hours later both myself and my wife were being violently sick, 20 mins after us our youngest started, the sickness went through from 10pm to around 7 this morning and I can honestly say I’ve never felt so bad... still feel very nauseous now and can’t even contemplate eating anything. The strange thing is our oldest, (8) has been absolutely fine. He ate up everything, I divided the prawns up equally so we all had the same, very odd.

I do t think I’ll eat another prawn again....
Yuk, food should be frozen when first purchased. Not day before it goes off!
Or just have your fishmonger deliver day boat caught prawns to your house fresh for the day!

Surprising to see the number of people mentioning food poisoning from bagged salad. I can join that list too as the only ever time I'd had food poisoning was after eating some cheese sandwiches I'd made for me and missus and I filled mine with the bagged salad but she didn't have any. Within a couple of hours I was throwing up constantly to the point where my stomach was completely empty and nothing more would come out but the retching still continued! The worse day of my life for sure. The missus was absolutely fine. The bread, butter and cheese was all from the same packs/block so it can only have been the salad. Not touched any bagged pre-washed salad or veggies since !
